red sharpie or red gel paper

I went out tonight and tried out the head mounted Cree light for scanning. I currently have a clear scope cover and colored it with a red sharpie on both sides. Am I better off putting the red gel paper behind the lens as I didn't think the light was very bright. I am comparing it to my XLR 250. Evan with the red sharpie the light looks a little white yet viewing out a ways but in the house on the wall it looks pink to red. This is the first time I went out with this light for scanning as I normally use the XLR 250 for scanning and one mounted on the gun.

Try the red gel and see what you think. It will do several things. It will be a prettier shade of red, especially on snow...it will be noticeably dimmer. When using a light to scan with, the less you see, the easier it is to pick up eyes. IMO, a red xlr250 is too bright for scanning. My favorite nights are pitch black with a DIM red light. I open up my beam to the point where I have a hard time seeing it. Do some testing on reflectors or stop signs and you will gain confidence. I hunted with Happy Friday night and he uses yellow gel on the same light. It is clearly brighter than the red. He commented he liked my red better, I said I liked his yellow better.

i agree on both...

but thee yellow gel needs two pieces...its bright
but i have not had any hangup problems...with a single piece..

red is good for me also...the nice thing about red...you may not see a beam as far as smilin said..but the eyes still light up a long way...

i would try what works best for you....the nice thing also is the high and low so it can be used in different type fields..

i used yellow this morning and i kept a steady beam just above a bobcat this morning...at 5am...for at least 80 to 100 yards it walked right up to my echo call on pygmy rabbit..and stared at it for about 2 minutes jumped up kinda funny went back 15 feet stopped turned around and looked at it again....it walked 20 yards from me the headlamp was on low now then but i looked right in its eyes ask smilin..i always wear a headmask...it looked away looked back and ran when the local fire whistle blew...

the lights are great there are others out there but watch for the ones that have the small eyelit thin plastic ear on each side they break easy...and cant be fixed...

my neighbor has the markers with the reflective tape on the top for marking things she doesn't want me to hit while plowing snow and I can pick them out easy with the way the light is now. About 100 yards away. Is that how eyes will show up? I didn't see anything last night calling. Maybe I'll try a piece of the red gel on the scope cover. My wifes fingernail polish remover will take the red sharpie off I believe.

do you got yellow gel..try it im tellin ya youll love it....

i seen that bobcat at 200 easy on high kicked it down to low at about 75 or 100 and they still glared...blindingly...lol

you gonna put the red gel between the cap and the light lense..or under the light lense...

I put the red gel under the lens and took the scope cover off. I also put a short piece of copper pipe insulation on it for a halo shield because last night it was lighting my barrel a bit.

I went outside before and was able to try the light on a deer about 40 to 45 yards from me by the feeder. I couldn't believe how its eyes lit up with such little light on it. It was like someone had two lights over there.

I just ordered two more of them for scanning. I am a dealer for the Kill lights and I can't believe these litle lights are only 20.29 shipped to my door. I'll use one for out in the shop and have a spare for what ever. I hope I'll be getting some bobcat fur tomarrow night as me and my wife are going to try to call one in as it is the last night to hunt bobcat and fox here. Thank You to all who have replied to this as I feel really good about going night hunting now.

I went out again tonight and I think I am going to put a piece of the red gel in the clear scope cover so when I walk out I can flip up the scope cover and have a nice bright light for walking out to the truck.
