red wolf or coyote

I saw my first red wolf this past weekend I looked him over real well and he looked just like a coyote to me.I have been looking at pics on the net and trying see any small difference other than size and I don't see any. I call where both are present and the farmers and the deer hunters say shoot em and don't say anything.But I really don't want to shoot a protected species.Does anybody know how to tell the difference,any Ideas ?
 
I think that over the years, coyotes have bred with the red wolves, diluting the breed. Other than that, theo resemble the coyote, but with a slight reddish tinge.
 
K22 actually I saw him last week during a hunt in Beaufort county.He was very red and to large to be a coyote.We saw three coyotes and one bobcat but couldn't close the deal with any of them.We did manage to harvest three deer and catch some fish so we counted it as a good trip.I have heard of red wolfs in the mountains, but I have yet to make a positive ID on one.The state says they trapped all of the ones that they released,but I have heard of two that were mistaken and shot for coyotes in Jackson Co.last year.I didn't get to see them personally but I talked with one of the hunters,so who knows.

Circa; 1970, early snowfly. My Dad & I went up to Alden, Iowa. To a farmer/coyote houndsman's place. To look at one of his coyote trail hounds 4-sale.

We looked at the dog 4-sale & visited a bit. Then he say's, "come out in my other garage. I want to show you something"

Well...hanging on a nail on the wall. Was a very large canine [pelt][non-stretched]. Looked all coyote. But it was as Red as a Cherry Red Fox.

He said his hounds pushed it out of a small willow patch. In a otherwise flat barron cropland section, last winter snowfly.

It came to the gravel rd. His 17yr old daughter, tagged him with her 12ga. That canine weighed 75lbs, according to the farmer. Farmer called it a "coydog" Who knows what it really was. But he was a brute, for sure.
 
kirby The one I saw was just about as red as a red fox,a good looking dawg to say the least.But they do come in different color phases.On the local news at 6 tonight there was a short film clip of one foraging in a backyard in a nehborughing county.It was trapped by the wildlife and they told the reporter it was a red wolf or a hybrid.It looked like a big gray coyote to me.

Pretty cool seeing a wild canine. That is unknown or a different color. That big Red dog was as tall as my Dad[6'], hanging there on that nail. Most beautiful one I've ever seen.

A lot of hunters don't believe of these so called "coydogs" or coyote cross's. But people still rarely see them. I can only speculate as to the one's I've seen. Someday, perhaps I'll have some proof hanging on my wall.
