Even though I kill coyotes regularly, I haven't posted a story in quite some time. I think the reason being that I've only night hunted for several years now. I hadn't gone out in daylight since the last hunt my elderly partner was able to go, I'm not even sure what year that was now, 2021, 2022 at the latest. Night hunting involves some amazing technology, and it's almost like it's "clinical" seeing animals in black and white. I think I needed to see some color and get into some rough country that I won't get into at night so I decided today was the day to break the rut!
I didn't even get out early, I had a leisurely breakfast, loaded my sxs and gear and arrived about 10. The first stand I set up, and switched my remote to day mode, and it was so dim I couldn't even read it lol. I sat there, googled how to brighten it, and still couldn't figure it out. I could see just well enough to find lucky pecker. And maybe 5 minutes into that, this runt of a coyote wandered in at about 180 yards. I could barely see it in the grass lol.
Back at the RZR I figured out the remote and went on to the next stand. I went through a few sounds seeing nothing and I did my last scan with the binoculars and one popped in bright contrast skylined next to a yucca about 500 yards away, so I unmuted kryptonite and it started on a beeline. I was worried about the wind so I muted as it hit 300, it stopped at 280 and died right there. Pretty nice coyote there and I was stoked.
Just seeing them in daylight, I think was good for the soul!
