Allstar decides to call some of his ground this weekend asked if I wanted to tag along. Passing up coyote rich ground isn't happening, so we meet up and head out at daylight.
First stand late into the call, we have 2 pups come in and start barking and scratching around at Havoc. He stayed close to our stand and didn't engage but was ready to go. The coyotes stayed a good 300 yards out and finally another darker (Male Maybe) coyote came in to pull the pups back into the brush. Jack tried to make that shot but it was too far for either of us with the guns we had at the time.
Off to the second stand. We must have setup up over a coyote bedded because we had a real hard charger come in seconds into the call. Havoc had just set down and couldn't see the coyote from his angle and grass. Jack shoots the first coyote from about 50 fet to the right of me while Havoc is getting his bearings. It happened so fast him he wasn't expecting it. After a few seconds Havoc goes out to where he thinks the coyote is down, but then sees the second coyote coming down the fence row around to his right.
The coyote didn't care about havoc until the second coyote gets to the first and starts smelling. After a bit of posturing, Havoc sits down, then so did the coyote. Mexican standoff occurred. Still they were over 200 feet away from each other at this point. I decide to try and lay that one out since nothing was happening and just miss over the back. Coyote bolts and is a good 75 yards from havoc before havoc decides to chase. So Jack and I decide to take a couple of parting shots. (Havoc was no where near the coyote at that time)
Call was messed up and the remote locked up. Jack couldn't hit pup distress.He tried pup distress on hand call then once he got the ecall fixed we continued that for a minute hearing the other coyote barking in the field to our right about 4-600 yards out. After 8 minutes, he shows back up. Sees Havoc chewing on the 1st coyote and then comes back in for the challenge.
Havoc is preoccupied with fur at that point and didn't see him, so once the coyote looked our way and froze, I took him. That coyote would have never come back in had it not been for Havoc on that stand. ( At least not into shooting range!)
Now, the Video. Decided to try out a Gopro camera on my rifle to see how it works. Had a couple of other uses for it, but thought it would be a good morning to try it out. I don't get any good long range footage out of it but it gives great field of view. Great for shotgun work though. Zooming in with the video editing causes youtube to pixelate real bad, so I left the zoom off.
I pulled the video out and "narrated" it for the parts you can't really see. Both coyotes came to about 150 yards and got dispatched. It was a fun hunt and hope you enjoy Havoc (Decoy dog) working and recovery.
