Reloading 22-250-choices

After all these years I am going to start reloading 22-250
Need opinion on bullet for coyote in the 40-45gr range and powder choice.
What has worked for you??

I'm shooting a 55gr vmax with 35.0gr W-748 in my 22-250, which also doubles as my formers for the AI. Which loves the 52 A-max, with 39.0gr of w-748. So far my longest is 630yds on two separate p-dogs. Can't help with the smaller bullet.

WW,
Sounds good on the w-748 powder but I thought that a bullet that is explosive on p-dogs might not work to good on a coyote I just dont want to have a splash and wound a coyote.

Just thought I would add some info,The rifle is a Browning Micro Medallion and I have its sister rifle in a 7mm-08 had these two rifles for years in the gun cabinet and thought it was time to use them. They are very light weight and short barrels.
I tried some 55gr ammo and it had lousy groups so tried some 40gr ammo and it shot very well for such a pencil barrel. Twist rate 1-14 if I remember correctly.
Shot some Remington 45gr jhp ammo today and at 200yds I shot groups of 1moa to 1.5moa darn good for not being able to see the 1" dot on the target cross hair covered the whole dot.
So any help would be great on reloading this little rifle.

GrizzlyBear:

Try the Sierra 40 gr HP and Speer 45gr Soft Point/spitzer. Also the 52 gr. Speer HP is very good in the 22/250 but may/ may not create some pelt damage on the exit depending on hitting bone/or not at impact. None of these bullets typically splash at shorter ranges. All three are very accurate.

W-748 and IMR 4064 are good powders in my experience, with the lighter bullets in the 22/250.

good hunting to you.

I don't know if this one will work for you with the info you shared but I shoot a 55 SP either hornady or remingtion soft points. 35 grains of RL-15 pushing them at 3500fps, I get great results with this bullet with my exits only being the size of a quarter. But like any of the 22 calibers if you hit big bone it will still blow a big exit hole. But I'm real happy with this load myself. Best of luck!!

My 1:12 twist likes the 45 gr soft point with IMR 4064 or 4320. Somewhere around 35 grs if I recall correctly ( don't have my notebook on me for exact load)

I don't know about bullet, but if I remember correctly h380 was made to start with just for 22 250 so if you can find a bullet to match up with that powder, might be just what you want.. I use h380 with Barnes varmit grenades, 36 grain haven't shot them yet couldn't tell you how they group, but h380 with sierragame kings out of my Remington 700 243 you can't beat it with accuracy. At 150 yards could cut holes

grisleyhunter, I see you live in the cold north. One tip I'll throw out there is if you plan to shoot in the winter stay away from ball powders.

H380 was the first powder I tried in the .22-250. It shot great all summer but around Oct I noticed the poi changed, and the colder it got in Ohio the more it changed. I switched to Varget and that problem went away.

I had the same problem with 55 gr bullets in the 1:14 twist. They were OK but not as good as the 50 or 52 gr bullets.

One of the most accurate loads I've ever shot in a 22-250 is 39.5 grains of Varget with a 40 grain VMax. I've killed coyotes with it, but I actually prefer a 50 or 52 grain bullet for hunting purposes.

Also need to ask how important is it to stick with the same head stamp because I have saved all my old brass and some are Remington and some are Federal.
Will they have the same POI or is the 250 a bit touchy.

I sorted mine out when resizing and keep them together most of mine is Remington and Winchester but mainly to keep track of times reloaded to see which brass lasts longer, I haven't noticed a different POI between the different brass.

I've shot A lot of coyotes with plastic tipped bullets and the Nosler BT is the only one I haven't experienced any splash wounds with. The Sierra BK's seemed to shoot better and performance on prairie dogs is amazing, but, they don't like shoulder or any other heavy bone on coyotes. As for powders there are A lot of powders that will work in 22-250. I recently started with IMR 8208XBR and doing very well. With a 1-14" twist I would get some Nosler 50gr BT's and some Varget or 8208XBR and you should find a load very quickly with good velocity. Good Luck.

Berger 55g Target only requires a 1-14 twist

I shot 55g bullets in my 222 and 22/250 since the year 1975, Remington 22/250's are notorious for loving the 55g nosler ballistic tip which has the 1-14 twist.

Around 1990, Nosler made the original design of the 55g that would not stabilize in a 14 twist. Bunch of guys shot that bullet and saw problems. Then Nosler took that particular bullet off the market for about 2 years or more. THen they introduced a new 55g that would indeed stabilize in a 14 twist. Rumors have persisted ever since about the 55g bullet not stabilizing in a 14 twist. Now, the only other 55g bullet that I have seen that was margainal is the 55g Sierra Blitz king, which is a long bullet. IN some 14 twists, this bullet may not be stable unless you really get the speed up.

All other 55's that I have shot in Remington and custom 14 twists have had no stability issues. Stabality issues are best seen as the bullet going through the target sideways, or just shooting very LARGE groups.

For the 40-45gr range: 40gr nosler ballistic tip, max charge imr 8208xbr, cci 250, 2.350" oal. Puts coyotes down fast and groups 3" at 600 yards in my rifle on a calm day.

For the 50gr range: 50gr sierra blitzking, close to max charge imr 4007ssc, cci 250, 2.350" oal. Puts coyotes down fast and groups 4" at 700 yards in my other rifle.

All 55gr plastic tip bullets keyhole and terrible accuracy after 300 yards in both my rifles. I have 1-14 twist rifles. 300 yards and in they group good and perform well on coyotes.
