Reloading 300 H&H Magnum

My brothers and I have our Grandpa's 1957 Winchester model 70. Last year I used it to take a doe in Montana. I saw that the accuracy was fading before the season, but didn't work on it until this winter when I cleaned the heck out of the barrel with Hoppes copper remover/ bore cleaner. It took three days of brushing patching and soaking.Trying my reloads this spring I was shooting 2 & 1/2 inch groups at 100 yds. I had loaded these rounds to the maximum velocity. I turned and annealed the necks on my brass and deducted a full grain of IMR 4350.This morning I tried out the new loads and was relieved to have close to 1 inch three shot groups. (Better than ever before.) I was drawn for bull elk this fall and was hoping to use Grandpa's gun again.Glad this worked out.

Sound great. I’ve never owned one but the 300 H&H seems like a fine cartridge. Especially with the family history it sounds like a keeper.

Thanks guys,I wanted to share this with the group to demonstrate how degrading accuracy is sometimes curable.
My Grandpa died 30 years ago this month, but his rifle keeps on going.

i bet the slightly reduced loading had a lot to do w/ it. My rifles shot better about 90% or less than 100% loading.

Removing copper also helped for sure.
