Reloading for an AR-15?

not usually.

most books run a section right after 223 called 'service rifle', and typically only includes a couple of heavyweight selections.

my ar-15 load is 24.0 grains of rl-15 behind a 75 grain pill. i use the same load for competition or just plinking.

I been using the data off of the Hodgdon.com and was wondering if it was okay for AR's and Bolt Actions? It looks also that I'm going to need a Sierra Manual... Using Sierra 69 HPBT Match bullets and H335 powder. As always that you for the help.

H335 Hodgdon showed start at 22 grains and max 24 grains but I'm not sure if that's for an AR. I wouldn't be asking if I was loading a bolt action, but these AR's from what I have seen on here seems to be mixed reviews on that question.

Here is info from Sierra, just click on the link, http://accurateshooter.net/Downloads/sierra223ar.pdf

+1 but 24.5grs

Yep, just buy a lb of benchmark and some 55 grain bullets (hornady vmax for me) and start loading. Start in the middle for charge weight and you should hit the sweet spot towards the high side.

The way I understood it was Max loads on a bolt action might be to much for an AR-15. I got a reload data book comming that has AR data. When I bought the AR I just assumed that the powder loads were the same.

Yep, 24.5 grains for me too!

And a 55 grain Sierra HP.

From what I have read the reason there is a difference in loading data is not because of what the chamber and barrel can handle it is because of the AR being Gas Operated and damage to said parts of the AR form to much pressure from loads for a bolt action. Now if your loads fall into the range that is OK for an AR then the point is mute.

Works for me, but substitute 55 gr. NBT.

This load is slightly above Hornady 7th & Hodgdon 26th but just below Sierra 2nd edition maximum load. Produces 3300 fps. and shoots great in both AR & Savage FP10. As stated by varmintgitter, being a ball powder, meters great in Dillon measure.

Nice shooting guys and thank you for the load data.

I should have mentioned this at the start so I'm shooting a RRA varmint 24" heavy barrel 1 in 8 twist. I'm going to be loading 69 grain Sierra's and going up from there.

A AR 15 with the 5.56 round has a 60,000 PSI.

A bolt gun with the the 223 Remington is 55,000 PSI.

Kind does make you think...don't it?

My thought is that the Sierra reload data starts higher (charge weight) for an AR Rifle because of the pressure required to make it cycle properly.I was not aware of this when I first started reloading and with my .223 Remington I never experienced any problems using the minimum loads (starting grains) with any bullet powder combination. However when I started reloading the larger (R25 in .243 Win.)I did have problems (short stroking) ocasionally at the suggested starting point. If I remember correctly (sometimes I dont)I did compare the data in the Sierra load guide and the Max charge weight was the same AR vs Bolt Action.I could be totally off base on this so feel free to correct me, like I said this was my thought.
