Reloading Once Fired Military brass and getting flyers?????

I have been tinkering as usual, and have found a load that will make my Encore .223 a true blue 3/4" shooter if it weren't for that one dang flyer every four or five rounds. I have noticed a distinct pattern in my groups. Four shots all in a nice cluster well under an inch, and then....FLYER!

I really don't think it's my shooting as I don't typically have any trouble shooting MOA groups or better off the bench with any capable gun. I've worked hard on my reloading practices and have been very meticulously while working loads.

With all that said, I think my flyer problem may be caused by the brass that I'm using. It is once fired military .223 brass. I have resized it, trimmed it all to the correct length, cleaned the primer pockets, etc. All with no improvement. I'm about to purchase some new brass to determine if that is my problem, but wanted to find out if any of you have ever had this problem with military brass? If so, did you solve it, or did you have to go to different brass? And lastly, who's brass would you recommend?

Thanks for any input.

I use L/C mil brass in my AR-15 and my Remington Classic .223 and have no problems. You might try some new brass and see if that helps. GENE'O

Is the flyer always in the same place? Start marking or seperating the flyer case and then weigh the flyer case compared to the good rounds or just toss out the flyers and and you should find the problem.

Second sugestion shoot two rounds go have a non -caffinated drink and shoot the bull for a little while, shoot two more again leave the bench for a while and relax, and do it again, if you get a flyer again mark the case and inspect it and compare it to the others.

I don't think it is the brass as you say that on the 5th round of a group you get a flyer. Does this flyer go vertical every time?

utah,

I'm using LC87 mil-brass in my .223 26" Encore. No fliers to speak of. I've got tons of the stuff off of our old Sheriff's range, so it was a no brainer.
One question....are the headstamps all the same, meaning the arsenal and year ? I'm assuming so, but had to ask.

I had a little trouble getting a given load to shoot at first, but using 55gr. Vmax's, WWSR primers, and 21.2grs. of IMR4198, everything came around nicely.
Clean, trim and swage out those primer pockets and you should be good to go.

1/2" groups or better are the norm with them shooting 5rns. at 100yds.

Take care,
Bob

Stop now and call it good, critters never wait for you to shoot them more than once. I won't say how mine shoots on this board no more cause I get grief for it. I will say this much, when I walk up to the dog the hole is right where I put the crosshairs and one shot was all it took.

I have a CZ varmint that will put 4 shots into a ragged hole, then one of the 5 will always end up about .5" outside of the group. this is with 2 different factory ammos. If you find the answer I am all ears

I shoot three shot groups 1" or less with my 22-250 at 100 yards every once in a wile i will get a flyer i run a patch through the bore and start all over it seems to help.......

It's not always the fifth shot, and it's not always in the same place. It's one of five, might be the first, might be the last, and so on. I'll get it figured out though. I'm going to change my seating depth a bit and see what that does. I've been running about .019 off the lands, and a friend of mine thinks I should try getting a bit closer than that. We'll see how it goes.

Thanks for all the help boys.
