Rem 722

Picked up a Remington 722 chambered in 6x222 that had been camo painted. Found out it has a Lilja barrel on it. Once I got the paint stripped off I found that the wood was pretty decent so I refinished it and sent the receiver and barrel off to be re-blued. Suppose to get the dies and some brass from the guy this next week. Kinda chomping at the bit to give it a try. Guess if I don't like the caliber I can have it re-chambered to a 6x45 as I have a ton of 223 brass. Anyway its always nice to add a new shooter to the critter gitters.
Anyone else shoot a 6x222??

Did you take photos of it before you sent it off?? We always like to see the "Before" and "After" shots, as well as the groups it produces...The 6x222 would be an interesting round and possibly very accurate at longer distances..

Sam Fadala built one for his wife and there is a good write up on it in Wolfe Publishing "Wildcat Cartridges Vol. II". Sounds like a nice cartridge. I kind of like the 6mm on the small cartridges, I shoot a 6x45 and a 6mm-204 both in bolt actions.

The 6x47mm/6mm-222Rem Ma was one of the premier benchrest cartridges for many years.

Enjoy your find. I built a 722 into a 22-250 with a 7oo LVF barrel and 700 ADL stock, it doesn't take much fitting to make it work you can even use your exist bottom metal with a BDL stock.

This is the rifle before I got everything stripped of paint. The barrel had a lot of fine scratches on most of the top of barrel and it looked like [beeep] so it will be re-blued
When I get it back and finished I'll post a after pic

I just built a 6mmx222 this year on a left handed mini Mauser. It wears a 24 inch #1 contour PacNor barrel and an MPI stock. My initial load testing so far has been limited to the Speer 1211 80 grain spitzer. The load I currently am working with uses BL-C2 and churns up 2608 fps. Not a barn burner but very accurate.

I'll be doing considerable more load development this winter and have 200 rounds of brand new Sako brass with which to do my serious load development work.

I brought the rifle with me down to eastern Washington to hopefully try it out on some coyotes. Forty stands later and no coyote response it remains unblooded. I guess I'll have to get after the fox and lynx when I get home.

It is a delightful round to shoot. My rifle weighs about 5 3/4 pounds and is an joy to carry and recoil is essentially non existent. I built with that in mind, as a light weight calling/stalking rifle with enough power for an occasional wolf. At the same time with mid range bullet weights at moderate velocity it should be pretty gentle on fur, even the more delicate fox and lynx. I had hoped a few coyotes would offer themselves up in the interest of bullet performance testing. It wasn't to be.

Fadala reported getting up to 27 grains of BL-C2 in his cases with an 80 grain bullet. I don't see how he did it. I've checked several brand of brass and cannot get that much powder in any of them. Perhaps the cases he was using had a little more capacity. I believe he used Speer cases in his load development and they are not available anymore.

It has been a fun little round to work with. I have data from Hodgdon and from Fadala's article. I've posted a fair amount about it on the 24HCF and AR forums. I opted for the 6mmx222 over the 6x45 and 6x47 because the mini Mauser magazine is not well suited for either of those. The box is a bit short and OAL is limited to 2.226 for reliable functioning. That means the bullets are seated very deep in the case on the 45 and 47 cases. Here's a few pics.

This is the action in the white with a 6mmx222 dummy round. A good fit.

Here's a line up for comparison. 6mmx222 loaded to fit the magazine, 6x45 to the same length, 6x45 seated to the base of the neck, 6x47 seated to the base of the neck, 25x222, 25x45 and 25x47, 6.5x222 and 6.5x45.

Give the 58gr V-max a shot. It has proven to be very fur friendly and is very accurate in the guns I've used it in. If you need a Lead Free for any reason the Nosler 55gr NBT Lead Free has been a lot better bullet than the 62gr VG.

I got my dies from CH4D. I've bought three sets of wildcat dies in recent years and have been well pleased with them. They are a lot less expensive than RCBS custom dies and the quality is very good.

C&H has been through a few hands since I started doing business with them in the 70's, they've been great. I needed a set of 6.5x58R Sauer, one of the rarer cartridges and he had a set on the shelf including a set of sizing dies to take .264 bullets down to .260 to fit the bore of my rifle.

They make great presses and trimmers also.

They had all three sets of dies in stock when I ordered. I also got one of their 30-416 expander dies. Actually it goes in two stages, 30-35 and 35-416. Works great for making 400 Whelen brass.

They have or can produce dies for some of the most obscure rounds imaginable. And at a decent price.

What a nice package. I'm betting you have a real winner on your hands right there.
I'm anxious to see the after pix.
