Remington 1100 question

I’ve got an old standard weight Remington 1100 20 gauge that’s been in the family for awhile and I’m wanting to repurpose it, the serial number ends in X. And to my understanding it’s 20 gauge built on the 12 gauge frame. Right now it has got a smooth bore slug barrel on it and I’m wanting to use it for birds. I’ve been looking on the internet and have found some used barrels for it in varying chokes but some are 2 3/4” and others are 3”. The receiver doesn’t say anything about length of shells or if it’s a magnum. My question is can it shoot either, just dependent on the barrel? I’d like a 3” barrel to use on ducks..assuming the old steel will do fine with the new non toxic shot. Any help would be much appreciated.

Prior to 1977, Remington used a 12 gauge frame on the 20 gauge. As to whether it will accept a 12 gauge barrel?????????? If it will, a good smith can convert the receiver to shoot 3" shells.

It still may/probably need converted to shoot the 3" shells. Then the correct barrel. My smith converts the 12 gauge all the time. Not sure about the 20's. I can ask him later today, he in the deer woods now.

Unless your going to shoot waterfowl and use steel, 2 3/4" should handle just about anything. My old browning would shoot 3" but it never got fed anything but 2 3/4. Fiocchi Golden Pheasant 5's were the cats meow on wild MT and SD pheasants. Bismuth and tungsten matrix worked for waterfowl and 2 3/4" #3buck on coyotes.

Another vote for only 2 3/4", my 1970s 1100 20 ga LW was successful on ducks, pheasants, grouse, timberdoodles, etc.
I was always careful to pass on shots that felt to long, it kept my hit average up !!
That 1100 LW is my all time favorite gun, its easy to point and has put the most meat in the freezer.
Had it refurbished a few years ago, the smith said it was still very clean,

I have an old WIngMaster 12 gauge. My smith said he could open it up for 3" shells but it shoot the 2 3/4 so good I didn't really feel the need. I run a modified barrel and I can reach out there quite a ways just like it is. Don't fix it if it ain't broke.

It’s not that I want to fix it. I want a barrel that I can I shoot shot out of. I don’t feel that slug barrel with rifle sights will do the job. So if I’m buying a barrel I’d buy a 3” barrel to have that option; if it’s not feasible to do with the way my shotgun is right now, I’ll be fine buying a 2 3/4” barrel.

1, He isn't now or ever was my buddy

2, not near as far as his.

I have 20 LW mag also; had it for the last 40 years.

Great gun. Have a 28” full barrel for pheasant and a 21” IC for grouse.

Put a bajillion rounds through it but have only shot a million critters as I’m not that good a shot.
