remington 597 17hmr

any of u guys had any experirnce with these. i bought one the other day. 85 dollars didnt think i could go wrong put scope on and havent had time to shoot it yet. just wondering if anyone had any good or bad experirences. thanks matt
 
$85 is a steal as long as it is all there and in good condition. If I'm not mistaken, there was a recall not too long ago, but I believe it was more or less ammo related.

Let us know how it shoots when you get a chance. Hopefully you snagged yourself an $85 laser.
 
There is a recall on the ammo and on the gun, check on remington's web site for the recall. There is something about returning the gun and getting $200 back.
 
I have had great results with mine. I shoot Hornady ammo. Excellent in every way. I was told by a Remington Tech, for best results make sure you are using the updated metal magazines and only load 5-6 rounds. The trigger can use some work. Midway has a hammer upgrade that is supposed to help.

I am looking to pick up a 597 in .22LR.

I have one and execpt for the mag problems, love it. I load 5 rounds to the mag and get along pretty good. It's iffy if you load more than 5, rounds hang up in the mag. Hadn't heard about any recalls on them. I've also have a 597 in 22LR, that my wife uses, untill she decides she want's something different.
 
In addition to limiting to five rounds, I keep the mags clean and lubed. I just give them a good dose of FishOil(WD40).

Don't forget good glass.

I have a ton of fun with my 597!

Zero problems.
 
A great number of them have blown up. The 17HMR cartridge has just to much preasure for it to work in an auto loader chambered for it. Remington says don't shoot the ammo in ANY 17HMR rifle no matter what brand. All rifle makers that built a 17 HMR have discontinued them. I think VQ still offers one but I'm not positive. The other ammo brands have not said anything about it but the ammo is all made in the same place to the same 2550 vel spec.

I have one and shot a lot of sage rats with it. One time I think that a round did not chamber all the way and it blew powder on my face. It also put a small hole in the top of the action. I had to use a knife to pry the casing out of the chamber. I was a little nervous but then proceeded to put about 200 more rounds threw it that day (poor ground squirrels!!)
 
I've been using 20gr XTP Hornady in mine and checked out the recall. IF they want to trade a 22mag 597 they might get my 17. I put the 20grs through my Chorny and it show 2311fps as ave. Anybody else checked theirs with a chronograph?
