I was thinking about getting one for some close range varmint shooting, just wondering what you guys think of them i really like the way they look and feel ,ive heard many great thing about the ruger 10/22 but i think the 597 is a nicer looking gun, To those of you who have one how do they shoot? I can pick one up for a 169.99 canadain so i think thats a good deal or should i look at getting a 10/22 and getting a diffrent stock?

5059........log into www.rimfirecentral.com and read all about most any rimfire,,including the one you're interested in.
I own a 597 in 22 mag HB and I like it..........but also had some issues. It shoots great..33gr premier ammo best and Win. silver 40gr or black box 34gr good also.
I also added an aftermarket trigger/hammer which helped. Just read alot before you buy.
I hope that helps you decide.

I shoot and have the same setup as huntn4wiley. Saved me some typing. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gifI installed the Jarvis brand hammer.I can shoot a 5 shot group that will cover a dime at 50yds if I do my part.

I had one....hated it jamed like you would never belive I even bought a stell mag for it didn't help...i got a ruger 10-22 now, and it has yet to let me down.

My uncle just sent his 1022 mag back to factory due to a cracked bolt. factory told him that they are discontinuing the 1022mag, therefore, they would replace it with a 77/22. He has not choice in the matter, cause they will not fix his 1022.

Hes the winner in the end, 77/22 is way more gun imo! He can flip it and go get a couple 597's in .22 mag, or .17 hmr plus a .22 lr. I'd like his deal!

I have a 597LSS shoots better than my 10/22, but trigger is heavy. I should replace with someday. I got one of the early models (only out for 1 month) & the mags stunk. Rem had a deal if you send them 1 old mag, they replaced it with 2 updated plastic ones. So I got 4 in return that work well. I bought a metal mag for it & it won't feed at all, go figure. The very 1st magazines were fragile, brittle plastic. If you dropped one that was fully loaded it would break easily.

I have one in 22 lr.---its DARN accurate, but the trigger is a touch heavy, and the thing jams a good deal of the time. I tried a metal mag. and it helps a little, but still jams too much in my opinion!!

blakinater, yeah I know it's a better gun, but now he's stuck with a stock and hammer/sear for a gun he no longer has.

Thanks for all the info, It sounds like the 597 jam lots
thats kind of got me headed for a 10/22.
Are there any other good quality semi autos that i should maybe take a look at? OR should i go with a bolt action bull barrel?

I have a 597 22 mag heavy barrel and love it, never had any problem what so ever. I did put in an aftermarket trigger to lighten the trigger pull but its deadly accurate. I did alot of research before i bought my gun, I am no expert, nor claim to be one, but what i got out of it was to get a 10/22 mag to shoot as good as a 597 you will be spending more money for more aftermarket products than a $25 trigger.

For those who have a 597 that has jam issues have you tried to loosen the tension screws on the action rails? From what I read on rimfire central this is usually the problem and it is an easy fix.
Good Luck,
Tuco

I have a 597 with no jamming problems. Get the remington as you will have to replace a lot of parts on the ruger to make it as good as the remington.

I have the 597 LS HB in a 22 mag. I have not had any problems. It is very accurate. I ordered and recieved it about 3 weeks ago. I shot about 500 rounds through it. Not 1 jam yet. I love it.

I bought both in 1998, the ruger was sold the same year and I still have the 597. The 597 is 10 time's the gun the ruger is, all you need is a scope and your all set for what ever you want it for.Almost every time I,m at the range if someone has a 10/22 they have some kind of problem with it
