I know the 2 are different but I've noticed a few of both for fairly cheap on Gunbroker and wanted some opinions on one in 308, 243 or 6mm for a deer and varmint rifle?

They were intended for the low price market - truck and tractor and farm house rifles.

The 600 came out with a cheesy plastic "vent rib" and plastic trigger guard. People hated the rib.

So Remington came out with the 660 - no rib, but still plastic trigger guard.

AND, it was available in the magnificent "350 Remington (belted) magnum (the rifle weighed as much as your 10/22 - it was LIGHT WEIGHT!!

Shoot it in Texas and get up off the ground in New Orleans.

But if you get it in one of the sane calibers, they are great rifles - you can get a replacement blued steel trigger guard from Brownells,

They are a ton of fun in 223.

Thanks

The potential is there - you will need to glass bed one when you get it - but other than that, they shoot VERY VERY well.

I have several in both 600 and 660. They are great shooters with not so good triggers. The short barrel makes for unpleasant shooting in all but the .224 calibers. There are very few after market options for them. Trigger stocks and the like.

If you find a factory original in 223 for less than a new car price grab it. They only made a few and are worth a mint.

Unless you are into them or you want a rifle as is with no worries about upgrades I would pass and grab a 700 or model seven.

Be careful. Make certain it is an original and not a rebarrel.

They are worth a bunch so counterfeit is always an issue.

A friend gave me his 600 Mohawk in .222 to put a scope on and sight in for his grandson. Rifle is in great shape and the 6.5-20X50 VX 3 he had me mount made for a sweet coyote rig. Took it hunting twice while I was trying to find ammo lol.

When I called to tell him I had it ready to go I really wanted to talk him out of it but I wouldn't take anything for the old 243 my grandfather gave me and I didn't feel right trying to set his grandson up with a newer rifle.

My dad's got a 600 Mohawk in .243, the rib was removed by the previous owner. The stock tends to get lite colored spots on if out in the rain, they do go away after a day or two back indoors. Accurate as any stock rifle I've seen, even shoots factory rounds real well. Pmc was loading the Sierra 100gr game kings, that load averaged 1/4 inch for three shots. He finally took it out hunting this past season and got a pretty nice buck about ten minutes into the first day.

Unless you just really want a 600/660, seriously look at a model Seven or some variant of the 700. You will be much happier in the end and the two are valued close to the same.

I just had a 660 in 243 rebarreled to 6x47L. Really like the rifle but stock options are tough. For instance, a McMillan will run about 600 bucks for that rifle. Laminates can be had but none in a true drop in configuration.
Another example is aftermarket trigger. Jewel is the only maker I know of for the 600/xp-100 type action. 260 bucks to 290 bucks.

Compared to the model Seven/700 the 600/660 is a pita for upgrades. That is just my experience.

Thanks smokeless, that makes sense I geuss there's alot better options out there. That m600 223 was at $3500 last I checked and the reserve still wasn't met. I saw one in 6.5 Rem mag. My understanding is it's like a short action 264 win mag? Just curious about the caliber not really interested in the gun.

Not a 264 WM

More like a short, fat 6.5-06 or 6.5-284, which is still no slouch, but it might be on the list of the 20 most unpopular cartridges of the 20th century. You couldn't give them away.
