Remington 700 .17 Remington LVSF, question for those who have one.

I am considering buying a LVSF in .17 Remington and was wondering can you see the hits or is the gun too light? I would be using it as a walking varmint for groundhogs and others pests as well as a calling rifle.

I am trying to decide between the .17 Remington and the .17 Fireball. I will either get the .17 Rem in a LVSF or pick up a .17FB in a SPS and drop it in a Boyd's thumbhole laminate. I have a LVSF in .204 and there is too much muzzle jump too stay on the target and watch the hit.

I have also considered a LVSF in 221 Fireball and was wondering of you could see the hits with it or is there too much muzzle jump? Thanks in advance.
 
Hi CGR and welcome to the board,I currently run an lvsf in 17 rem and can tell you yes you can see the hits with this rifle for sure, banjo string trajectory to 300yds coupled with very little recoil you will love it /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

+1 /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif I love mine.
It's no benchrest gun, but shoots sub MOA with a few of my handloads. It's killed everything I've asked it to.
Don't know if they're all the same, but mine likes alot of freebore. About 20 thou....
I removed the J-Loc, and installed a Timney trigger.
Timney's go in all of my 700's, and are set at exactly 2#.
It helps me to have all of my triggers the same, and I need all of the help I can get. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I was wondering how you guys liked the stock on the LVSF? I had a buddy that had one in 22-250 and he said it felt flimsy to him. I've been considering getting one of these rifles myself. Would like to hear everyone else's opinion on them.
 
The stock's not bad.
It's not a H-S or McMillan, but it's light weight and durable. I know cause I've dropped it a few times.
I can see where the fore end could get flimsey if ya removed the pressure pads, but mine shoots good with them so no problems.
I'm pretty sure they're made by Bell and Carlson.
 
I have had a 17 Remington LVSF for just a few short months. I do like the rifle and it is a dream to carry in the field. The rifle shoots really well with the factory 20 grain offering and right at 1" with the factory 25 grain offering. I am still doing load developement so I don't have a favorite load yet.

I haven't killed anything with it yet, but I have shot several 20 ounce water bottles. I had no proplem seeing the hit at 100 yards, with the scope on 14 power.

The LVSF stock is pretty good. It looks and feels nice. It does have those nasty preasure points at the front, but they haven't hurt the groups so far. I would like a better stock, but the current set-up is fine for my intended purpose with this rifle.

In the original post, the 17 Fireball was mentioned. I have more experience with this one. No problem seeing hits and a really fun cartridge. I have the SPS Varmint and I replaced the stock.

You can find some good deals on the 17 LVSF right now and could probably get a "better overall package" cheaper with the LVSF.

Thanks for the information guys. The LVSF is perfect for what I want to do with it. My biggest problem is that I have been unable to locate a LVSF in .17 Remington at a decent price. Anobody know where there is a new on the shelf at a decent price? I have been debating between a .221 Fireball and the .17 Rem. I need something that is not too loud has no recoil and is a good walk hunting gun. I have have found a couple .221's at good prices, but the few .17 Rem's that I have found are several hundred dollars more than the Fireballs. They are all LVSF's, but there is a huge difference in price. If anyone knows where there is one sitting at a reasonalbe price please send me PM. Thank you.
 
I had one and it shot well but I hated the blind mag it constantly would hang up when trying to load. And the fact you had to cycle each round into the chamber to empty it I did not like. Very nice size for carrying and I did not notice any flex in the stock. Just hated the mag.
 
+1 on the rifle. You can see your hits through the scope and the stock is made by Bell and Carlson. I have four of the lvsfs and think they are the best choice for a coyote rifle. I have only had one of the four that didnt shoot well so I recrowned it with an 11 degree target crown instead of the recessed it came with from the factory and it works great. As far as the magazine goes I would rather have the light weight than the bottom metal.

That's where he got his, and there may be some left.
He's a good guy and I'm sure he'll help ya if he can.
Also do a search for LVSF on here. Some one else posted about some good prices recently but I can't remember who or what the topic was.
Remington has stopped making any offerings in 17Rem so you may have to pay a little more if the leads don't work out. It might be worth it though cause there's no telling when or if Remington will pull their heads out and start making them again.
Hope ya find one, they really are just about the perfect walking varminter IMO.

You don't want a 17 Rem. The 17 Rem is LOUD. I find it much more objectionable than a 223. Not only is it loud but it has a high pitch noise that is very irritating.

Unfortunately for anyone who was interested in the LVSF in 17 Rem, I just bought the last one from that source. $575, unfortunately I missed the $50 rebate but that is still a hell of a deal. He does have some left in 221 fireball if anyone is interested in those. They have been discontinued for some unknown reason. Another genius move by Remington /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif.

Hi Jack

This puzzles me. My 26" barrelled 17 Rem in quite a bit more comfortable to shoot than the same gun that I have in .223. Blast is not near a bad. Were you shooting a short barrelled gun perhaps? One thing I like about shooting my 17 Remington is how pleasant the report is. It never wears on me like my other guns do.

Yeah, me too!

My buddy and I were shooting almost identical CZ 527 Rifles a few weeks ago. One was in .223 and the other in 17 Rem. We both thought the 17 a lot nicer to the ears than the .223 was. We were shooting at a covered range off benches and if you were a few feet to one side or another of the rifles when the other guy was shooting you could really tell a diff between the two. This even helped make me want to buy one- that and no kick at all.
 
I called them last night and didn't get anyone and then called today on my lunch and he said he just got off the phone with a member of the forum and sold the last one. I guess I shot myself in the foot by starting this post.
 
Sorry CGR, that would be me. I had to do some jockeying to get the funds and assumed they would be all gone when I was finally in a position to call. About the only time in my life I am not the one who is a day late and a dollar short. Quite a few of them around still, the trick like you said is finding one that is reasonable. The only thing against these guns was that they were a little over priced with the stock they come with IMO.
 
save the$$$ Get the remington sp varmint, with the extra weight you will have less recoil and then in time get a stock for it off ebay!
You can get the sp for right at or under 500. I'm going to get one in .243 a combo coyote rifle for me and my son can use it on deer. In time I'll up the stock but from what I hear hand load and they are a great rifle for the price.
I have a rem 22-250 in varmint laminated stock and I can see the coyote fold with it. You should have no problems with the 17 fireball. If it where me I would go with the fireball, looks like a great cartridge. Out west we shoot to 500 yards and I like the knock down power of the 22-250 and .243. heck I like my 25-06 for coyotes, and makes an awsome long range deer/goat gun. You get muzzle jump with it though. Good luck.

I guess it would vary according to how you loaded it. The guys I go hunting with who use 17Rem are definitely louder than a 223 and it is a high pitch noise.
