I found a .17Rem LVSF today for 599.00 and thanks to this post I brought it home. You guys are killing me.It did not hurt that I had 200.00 in gift cards.

First off, would not pick a .17 FB over a .17 Rem at all. Secondly, if you guys are shooting anything with hearing protection you are gonna go DEAF! Period! Don't be fooled into thinking its not damaging your hearing. A .22 LR will damage you hearing.

Personally, I don't like the short barrel on the LVSF's because of vel loss. It will be like shooting a .17 FB out of a reg. rifle. Also, you must be a handloader to get the most from a .17 Rem. Factory Rem loads are what gave it a bad name. Prices on 17's are getting high as they are not being made anymore apparently! Found 8 .17 Rem BDL's and they were gone in one day!

I can't shoot anything without hearing protection, kills my ears for the rest of the day /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif. I will be reloading for the 17 so I will find something it likes. I think the LVSF is one of the better handling rifles out there, any loss in velocity will be a non issue in my book. I would like to have one in 17FB also and was hoping they were going to chamber the LVSF in that too. Remington then discontinues the LVSF and the 17 Rem. It Will be interesting to see how Remington discontinuing them affects the price of them. Pretty disappointing that Remington dropped it /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif.

I still see the LVSF offered on Remington's website. Have they been discontinued for sure???? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

It is on the website, but not in the 2008 catalog. Distributors are saying it is no more, what is out there is the end of them.

I always shoot with a good set of electronic muffs in place, so total noise this day and age is not a big issue for me - even when hunting... Yet, even with good hearing protection, I still notice difference levels of muffled noise.

But, at the rifle range where I shoot, others don't always wear good hearing protection (not my fault). I get more comments on the loudness of my 17 Remingtons than any other rifles I shoot.

The noise from a 17 Rem is a loud sharp high pitched crack like Jack mentioned. If you're getting less noise than with a 223 Rem, I would think you're not loading the 17 Rem very hot...

The 17 Mach IV/FB is definitely less loud than some other popular varmint cartridges, but I find it hard to believe the 17 Remington round ranks there too.
