I have a chance to pic up a Remington 700 5R Mil-spec in .223. Does anyone have any experience with these rifles? Does Remington still make these or are they discontinued and what are the advantages or disadvantages with the rifling? Also what would be a good NIB price for one of these? Any info would be great. Thanks

Brett

I had one in 308. Foolishly sold it. It was by far the best stock remington rifle I have ever owned and accuracy wise the equal to my GAP. It's heavy and I didn't care for the stock mostly due to the Palm swell, but I'm lefty. They get about $1150 last time I looked and I think they are worth the price. I don't get hung up on rifling type and haven't noticed a real appreciable difference in the way they shoot or clean up, but the rifling seemed to work for me when I had it. If you want a great target gun I would not hesitate, but for hunting I'd look for something a bit lighter.

I have a 308 & it is fantastic for a factory rifle. It is also very easy to clean, I can't tell you if it is the 5R rifling for sure or just a well made bore but it is the easiest factory rifle to clean I have seen. I bought mine up in Southern MO a year & a half ago for $999.00. I would say 1100 and down would be a great buy. The rifle loves 178 Hornady A-Max & 168 BT &It is not for sale!

Thanks for the info that's what I like to hear. I'm surprised you don't hear more about these rifles. I guess I've got a little thinking to do. Are these limited run rifles? Does Remington still make them?

i have a 5r cerakote from the custom shop in 223, the barrel cleans up fast and extremley accurate.
with 5r rifling your suppose to get higher velocties from what i understand

That's great the more I hear the more I think I should pick one of these rifles up. I've also been looking at a 700 police with the 40x trigger but I think I'd rather have the 5R.

They have been making these a while. Usually come with HS Precision green splatter stock. Danged accurate for the price. 1100 is about the going price, but then again, you get what you pay for. Have not heard of a lemon yet.

I like my 700p decently well...

I have a Timney 501T rigger at 10 oz and I have put the Wyatt's drop-in DBM. Quite nice...

I don't think you could go wrong with either. I just don't see enough intrinsic value to the 5r Mil-Spec over the 700p. This is just my opinion based on on side of this discussion.

I would go with the LTR with 40x trigger or an xcr compact tactical with 40x if you are thinking something other than the 5r, but I like short barrels (20") Just make sure you check sku numbers to make sure the guns have the 40x since that trigger is well worth the extra cost.

I purchased the Rem 5R in .223 about a little over a year ago. I too was not much of a fan of the HS stock so put a McM A3 SPorter and replaced the trigger with a Timney. I can honestly say I had a hard time picking a bullet to shoot as this gun shoots everything you throw at it. I settled on 69gr SMK's over 25.4gr of Varget. They are right around 3000 FPS. As for factory ammo, I didn't shoot much in it but I was surprised how well it liked the 75gr Hdy BTHP stuff. Has turned out to be one of my favorite guns. I think I ended up paying around $1150 and mine has the threaded barrel as well.

Here is a 10 shot group I shot today....pretty typical.
