Remington 700 Action Customn rifle question

Hi I am looking at getting a custom rifle made and I have a Model 7 700 243 gun that I am looking to buy AT A VERY GOOD PRICE to make the rifle. I want it chambered either in 308, 6mm-06, 6.5x257 roberts, 6.5x.284, 6mmBR. Will the bolt, bolt face, and the rest of the action parts work with these calibers??? Also does any postive or negative comments about these calibers??? I want a very accurate rifle that I can possible get one hole groups with.

A short action 700 will only handle stuff in the .308 win family with that type of action and bolt face. any -06 type requires the long action. Perfect action for a build though! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The 6mm-06 won't fit, nor any cartridge of 06 length. Like speed says you need the long Remington action for those. Usually you'll get the best accuracy from benchrest calibers rather than some of the wildcats your talking about.

Have the action blue printed when you have a custom barrel put on. There's lots of Remington specialists around working their magic on them. Do a search on the net and discuss your problem with some of the gunsmiths whom specialize in building Remingtons. It would be worth your time.

If you look at some of the competition guns your going to find that the Panda/Stolle actions are prevalent on winning guns. You might look into those also.

If you literally want "one hole groups" (as in one caliber sized hole), you are talking about a top flight benchrest rifle (and a top flight competitor). Stick to what's working at benchrest matches and be prepared to shell out many thousands of dollars and spend thousands of hours of range time.

It will also likely be a rifle that's completely unsuitable for field use.

Your best chance of having a one hole rifle will be with the 6 BR. Its possible to get a rifle built on a Remington action that will shoot smoking groups. I have a 6 BR on a Remington 700 that has shot a few one holers. Accuracy is a money thing....

I have a 6.5X284 that will pretty much shoot a one hole group at 100 yards, it weights 17 pounds and costs in the thousands to build, it is used in the 1000 yard matches.

I also have a 6 PPC that has shot more one hole groups than I can remember. It happens to weigh 10 1/2 pounds with scope. Its used for 100 to 300 yard matches.

You have much to learn, 'BAMA. Why not just buy an A-bolt? Or have a custom A-bolt built?.......grins

To let you know, there is probably no cartridge that's easier to get to shoot well than the 308 Win. Any of it's offspring are also pretty non-finicky.......

The 308 or the 6mmBR will fit your action and have the same bolt-face. The 6mmPPC is different. The others you mentioned are too long. The 6mmBR is a handloading proposition for experienced reloaders. You are better off going with a 308, 7-08, 260 or 243 IMO.....

Once I fry the barrel on my GAP 308, it will become a 260 AI. I feel it has major potential.......

I think I am plenty experienced to reload anything and I wont be getting a rifle built in any of those calibers you listed. If I were gonna go that route Id probably buy a Browning semi-auto (which I already have plenty). I want a BR gun. I am also never embarrassed to ask questions and if that makes me look as if I "have a lot to learn" so be it. I appreciate all the postive help and I am fully aware that one hole groups are few and far between. I guess what I meant to say was will this action be capable of producing close to a one hole group ever in 6mmBR or 308???

ALso would this action work on a 308 Norma Mag.????

I dont have to get this action...... I can get a new LVSF or VSSF in long or short action and take off what I dont want. I think one of the two come with a Mcmillian stock so I might could solve the stock problem (since I hear there is quite a waiting list of them anyways). I really want to know which of the calibers I listed would be the best for the application I want?? I talked to Lilja and Hart about the barrel and both said they could get me just about anything. Dan what kinda prices am I looking at to get this baby firing right???

I hunt every year with Desert Storm vet sniper who I talked with today about his old setup. He shot the 50 a lot in his squad but he said his 308 setup included 700 action Hart barrel, winchester magazine. Why would they use a Winchester mag??? He said they routely shot at 200-300 meters and the gun was very accurate however he didnt say anything about one hole groups. When I asked about what type bullets he said they were made in house by officers whose only job was to handload shells. The way he explained the bullet it had a full copper coated bullet with a tiny hollowpoint (sounds almost like the VLDS to me). It was interesting though.

Thanks IDBOB that guy has some real nice equipment. I like that bottom rifle in 6mm-.284 and what some groups at 300 yds some are 1/2.

I'm new to the site I know but you can spend a lot of money on a gun I know.My toughts to you is to start reloading.Factory stuff will get you on the paper but reloading will take you to a hole in one.

The Rem 700 is pretty much the standard for a "customized" action, but if you want a benchrest gun you won't spend much more (maybe even less) in the end buying an action that's custom made for it from the get-go (Stolle, Nesika, etc.), and the purpose built action will be worth WAY more for resale.

Best advise if you want to (successfully) play the BR game is to look at what's winning the type of matches you are interested in, equipment and cartridge wise.

The bullet your sniper friend was using in his .308 was likely a 168GR SMK.

I have 3 short action Remington rifles in the house. They are 22-250,308,and 7mm-08 youth. They all can take down quarters at a 100 yards with holes in the center. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
