Remington 700 chambered in 17 rem fireball

ok guys, I just took the plunge and talked the wife into getting one, while we was doing the paperwork to put it in layaway at Gander Mountain, she said she would finish paying it off and call it a Valentines/birthday present.

so my question is, whats the effective range of this gun and what scope should I put on it? where can I find ballistics for this caliber?

any and all information would be greatly appreciated, I plan on using this gun for vermin up to songdogs. thanks

I have a Rem 700 in .17 Remmy. Mine has the .26" heavy barrel and it sits in a factory laminated stock.

Because they shoot so well in my rifle, I use the 20 grain Vmax bullet almost all the time, but I do have some Dogtowns of the same weight that I may play with some. Be hard to beat those Vmaxes however as I have put a lot of prairie dogs and ground squirrels to sleep with this bullet.

Not too sure what most effective range is, but I have taken prairie dogs as far as 400 yards with this bullet. My ususal load is 23 to 23.5 grains of Varget with a CCI BR primer. I think that is pretty far for this little bullet, but it did kill the critter dead on the spot. I guess that is good enough.

Hope you like yours. I bought my first .17 Remington 30 years ago, and I still think that they are pretty nifty.
 
I shoot 17.9 grains or Reloader 10X, with 27 grain Kindler Gold bullets, remington 7 1/2 bench primers. Mine is a Remington 700 SPS Varmint 26" barrel.

The 17 MachIV and the 17 Fireball are virtually the same, so information concerning the Mach IV will apply to the Fireball.
I've owned 17 Rem. since 1971 and I would not be without one.
As for scopes, depends on what your using it for. Coyote/Fox, I don't use anything larger than a 2X7, for other critters, I guess its up to you.

Oh, congrads on getting the 17. Your wife sounds a lot like mine.
 
With respect to grouping, I've had mixed results with the 20gr. V-Max. Switched over to the 25gr. Kindler and H322 and that has been a fantastic combination.

Fun to shoot!

I personally had bad luck with factory Remington ammo. Best group in my CDL was about 2 inches. 14.5 grains of 4831 behind a 25 grain bullet worked real well for me...generally around 1/2 inch. Mine was sensitive about the case necks/bullet tension until I annealed the cases. Remember, with small cases and small bullets little things can have a big effect. One thing you will probably notice is that the gun has a very anemic ejection. The empty cases just kind of "spill" over the side when you open the bolt. Almost looks like they are not going to make it but mine has never jammed. Brownell's sells a Wolf ejector spring that has more pressure and cures the problem. I put a Nikon Monarch scope on mine. Should work fine for coyotes...I have killed alot of large woodchucks and a few foxes. Haven't shot anything over 300 yards away, yet.
