Remington 700 in 17 Remington vs CZ 527 in 204 Ruger

Let me start off by saying I've never owned a 204 Ruger or 17 Remington, so that's why I need your help.

In the area that I live in, it's rimfire or shotgun only for predator hunting, so I already own 22mag and 17 WSM.

I have access to land in PA where I can use other centerfire calibers. I can purchase a low round count Remington 700 in synthetic stock...has a bunch of brass, dies, berger and hornady bullets for $1,000. Or I can also buy a CZ 527 in 204 Ruger that also comes with dies, brass for $625.

I believe both rifles have RCBS dies. My prey mostly would be fox/bobcat. I suppose there are coyotes in the area as well.

If this was your money, which caliber would you choose? I am a fan of synthetic stocks as I feel it's much more durable than wood stocks. I'm afraid the wood stocked CZ may get some bruises on it. I'm not rough with my firearms, but synthetic is my preferred. The CZ is cheaper by nearly $400.

I WOULD PREFER THE 17 REMINGTON, HOWEVER AMMO MAY BE HARDER TO FIND. I have had both of the guns you speak of but either will do a good job without ruining pelts. I would guess that either one would shoot MOA at 100 yards. Just due to cost my vote goes to the CZ

JMHO Dave

I would go with the .17 REM. But I am nostalgic. CZ would be the better buy on the front side, but the Remington catches up pretty quick on re-sale value.

From what I see on the shelves, there is still a fair amount of bullets for reloading for either, the 17 and the 20. I hardly ever look at loaded ammo so I can't say on that. Value on the 17's seem to be going through the roof and the 204 seems like its at a stand still. If I were a betting man, I put my money on the CZ being a more accurate rifle. But thats just me.

Could not have said it better. I got my first .17 Remington in 1980 and still adore the round. Just loaded some more for it yesterday. Dollar for dollar the CZ likely will be the better deal, but yeah- if it was me and you got dies and a lot of components to go along with it I guess that I would go for the Remington. Just a word of warning- .17 Remington addiction is a hard one to overcome. Dang if I could over it during the last 40 years. Not that I have tried that very hard.

17 Rem. would be the best choice in my opinion. Love both calibers, but Fox and Bobcat pelt wise will not do well with the 204.
Go 17.

This is a tough decision for me as $400 difference is hard to ignore considering both rifles come with reloading components. The CZ is also lighter, which I like for a hunting rig.

Synthetic stock? Is it a ramline(cheap) or HS,McMillan makes a difference. Fox and cats go with the 17. New barrel for the rem will/could be cheaper. I'm already hearing about guys moving to "collect" 700 bdl's.

I'm a very big Rem 700 fan and view them as even if I don't like it as is, with a good smith and a good after market barrel I can make it dam near anything I want and it'll shoot with the best of them, but, I understand not everyone views things the same way.

I've had a 17 Rem and 204 Ruger both were in CZ 527 Varmint model rifles and they equally shot pretty well.

As for which cartridge to pick it'll mostly come down to personal preference and for me I'd take the 204 Ruger over a 17 Rem all day long. That's not to imply there is anything wrong with the 17 Rem I just think the 204 has a wider range of uses and a much wider range of bullet selection. If you shoot factory ammo I think the 204 has a lot more options compared to the 17 Rem also.

Remington sold the model 700 VS (Varmint Synthetic) in .17 Rem for a year or two. Maybe longer. It had the HS stock and that really would increase it's desirability. At least for me it would anyway.

H-S Precision list the stock on that rifle at almost $470. The fact that the rifle already has it on it would cinch the deal for me.

I have that very same stock on my M700 VS in .220 Swift. Bought it new over 25 years ago. Not wearing the same barrel any longer but all the rest of the gun is holding up very well. Love the H-S stock. Love it.

Tough call for sure. If the money were the same it would be a no brainer. If the 17 comes with a good pile of brass I'd go that way if I could spare the extra dough.

I've had several 204's, it's a great round and have 2 bolt guns (cheap) right now. I built a 17/223 in an ar and it had almost magical properties it seemed lol. Sadly it no longer shoots and I didn't rebuild it. The bore cam doesn't fit down that tiny barrel so I can't verify it's toast, but I'm pretty sure lol. I think I got 1500 rounds out of it.

When in doubt on a deal like this, go with the option that's harder to find and easier to sell. It sounds like those 700's are rare as hens teeth.

Muhuhaha think he'll go for it?

I'm not sure if some are missing it or just ignoring what the rifle would be intended for. Fox and Bobcat.
I've shot some Bobcats with my 204 and the results were ok, but all the shots were in the chest. I'm sure a behind the shoulder hit would have been devastating on the pelt and it is to much for Fox. Slowing the 17 Rem. down a bit and using a 20gr. bullet would work on Fox and Bobcat with a 17 Fireball being even better.
Coyotes are a totally different deal. I love the 17 Rem for Coyotes, but the 204 is every bit as good a pelt saver on Coyotes also.
If Fox and Bobcat were the main animals I was targeting then a CZ in 17Hornet would be the ultimate with the 22 Hornet running close behind.

I know I won't be able to hunt in the areas that allow centerfire too often in a given furbearer season in PA, that is why I"m having a hard time justifying spending a $1,000.00 on a rifle I'll only hunt with probably 4-6 times a year.

The Remington VS seems to be the better deal and the 17 Remington seems to be the caliber of choice.

I suppose I could also use the 17 Remington on ground hogs as well, so I can shoot it more often.

Well, I just found out the Remington VS in 17 Remington, is located in TX and I'm in PA. I was hoping to do a FTF transaction to save on cost, but now I'd have to pay to ship it to me and do the background check.

So, now I'm leaning towards the CZ since this guy is local to me.

Here, I thought you guys on PM made my decision for me and now it's gotten a little more complicated.

I would opt for the Remington, it’s more desirable and harder to come by. Nothing wrong with a CZ or 204 but you’d have something special in the 700 VS .17Rem. Shooing should be around 30-40$ I would guess and a transaction fee here is 20$. I think you would enjoy either but I’d rather buy the Remington knowing the value will probably only go up
