Remington 700 in 17 Remington vs CZ 527 in 204 Ruger

While I use my .17 Rem mostly for ground squirrels I have never made a prairie dog trip and left it behind. Out to about 400 yards even the 20 grain Vmax just kills them dead right where they are standing. I took a nice fat rock chuck a few months ago using one of Chan Nagel's 30 grain bullets. Dead at the smack. Less than 300 yards but still a good size critter. Ground hogs being the same thing it should work equally well.

I have a .204 as well and really enjoy it. Got its third barrel on it now. And will admit that for most shooting, especially those "outchonder" shots, the .204 is the better bet. Just something about those .17 Remingtons. Hard to get too specific but just love them.

I have both a Remington 700 BDL and CZ527 Varmint in 17 Rem.. I like them both but my Remington is a safe queen, I don't even have a scope on it any more.

They are both nice rifles and great shooters. I should probably sell my 700 BDL, might have to think about doing that.

Well the best option would be a CZ527 Varmint chambered in .17 Remington.

I love CZ rifles and I think very few other production rifles challenge it in terms of fit, finish and accuracy off the shelf.

I have several CZ's and the .17 rem is my favorite chambering in them.

Having said that, I think the CZ is the best value here in terms of what you are getting in a rifle. HOWEVER, if money isn't the driving force here, the .17 Remington is my choice and I'm not one of those 700 guys. I have a few, but not one who seeks them out.

The .17 rem is great on fox and bobcats, but that doesn't mean they won't flatten a coyote. I've shot coyotes DEAD out to 300 yds with the .17 rem and 25 gr hollow points. Also custom guys make 30 and 32 gr offerings with GREAT BC's.

The .204 is for sure going to have more down range energy and long range capabilities.

By best suggestion would be to determine what the use is. I honestly think they are both deals, so you really can't go wrong.

I thought it was already on the market!!!

I have a few guys who may be interested...

My 527 CZ is a .204 Ruger. It is a laser beam. I shot some 340 yard targets with it this fall. 5 for 5...I love the rifle and the caliber

Both cals. can ruin fur unless you either reload and test bullets for their destructiveness. Or shooting at ranges well past 100yds. Bullets traveling over 3000fps hitting thin skin like that of a fox or bobcat will tear. I would take the 17 over the 204 any day and experiment.

ACronin, I guess I might consider it on the market but I have not done anything specifically to list it. It is so dang pretty I hate to give it up but that is also why it is sitting in the safe and I keep going back and forth on whether to give it up or not.
