Remington 700 LV SF .204 that WON'T shoot?????

Just picked up a NIB 700 LV SF .204. Mounted a new Nikon Buckmaster 4-12 and sat down on the bench with factory Hornady 40 gr Vmax's and this thing is all over the place? Cant get it to repeat the same shot even within 4-5 inches! No nicks on the rifling at the muzzle and everything is nice and tight.

Any suggestions???

I read on here that alot of .204's will not shoot the 40gr Vmax. Im going to try the 32gr tomorrow but if something doesn't change quick Remy will be gettin her back.

A sign I just saw in a shop the other day read, "due to recent legislation, all firearms sales are final and non returnable".

Now I don't know if this means you can go directly to the mfg. for your money back or not.

I brought the trigger down to 2.5 pnds before i ever shot it. That and lapped the scope rings to be sure they were true.

I replaced my stock with a Bell & Carlson off of a titanium mountain rifle, removed the pressure point and free floated the barrel, bedded the action and now she shoots .5 moa with my handloads. I had great luck with Sierra 39g Blitzkings with BL-C2, and Nosler 40g B-tip with H-4895. Maybe my Krylon camo job helped mine shoot too. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I had one in 223 that was the biggest POS I have ever seen, but I am going to give you solid advise.

Do not touch it............
Send it back to them, let them deal with it. If you do anything to it then send it in they will replace any items you modified (like the pressure pads in the stock) and will charge you for it. If you play with the trigger and they notice its been tampered with, they will replace it with a new one and charge you for it.

Let them fix their own junk, send the SOB back to them, its not up to you to do it.

ETA
You shouldnt have to restock a brand new rifle so it will shoot, I got another thread going about the same crap..........talking about the same manufacturer too.

I totally agree with Furhunter on letting them deal with the problem if its a new gun. What else is going to send them the message that they need to fix their QC?
I got mine used and for a good price, that made it worth messing around to get it to shoot better.
Also FWIW the 40g V-max was and still is, the worst shooting bullet tested in my LVSF, so try some 32's before you freak out.

Seven,
Do some searching here on the LV SF's in 204 and you'll read diatribes about them! Mine hated 40 V Max's, factory or handloaded! It will not shoot 40 NBT'S either. It loves 40 Bergers and 39 SBK's as handloads. I floated the barrel, bedded the action, and had the trigger blueprinted down to 17 oz. It will now shoot .5" consistently with those two bullets. I have never tried anything lighter than 35 Bergers, and they shoot well, too.

I have three .204's in different gun makers. All of the three will NOT shoot the 40 grain bullets... Throws them all over the place.. But you take the 32 grain or 35 grain bullets and it puts them on top of each other.. Take the 40 grain and it opens up to about 2" or better at 100 yards and that will be the best you can do with it. Most of the time it will be opened up more than that. Good luck with the 32 grain bullets. Probably will fix it though. Let us know...

My .204 LVSF wouldn’t shoot either. I followed Flyrods advice and bought a bedding kit and learned to bed the action and free float the barrel to 1 1/2 " of the action. It now shoots 35 Berger’s with 4895 just under an inch. I have not tried 39 Blitzkings yet. It’s now one of my favorite rifles but I was extremely frustrated with it at first. Remington really blew it in my opinion. This rifle had everything to make it a great Varmint or a Mountain rifle but it’s hit or miss if you get one that will shoot or not.

Nothing wrong with the LVSF that isn't wrong with any other Remington. I can say that with the number of Rem's in my safe. The LVSF was one of the best formats for a rifle that Rem ever came up with. With that said it is sometimes a crapshoot on how one will shoot. Rem has had some QC issues in recent years. Try the 39 SBK's, they shoot in most 204's and the 32's should also shoot if anything is going to. The 40's shouldn't shoot as bad as you are saying though. Try the other bullet's first and if it is still horrendous send it back to Rem and let them fix it. They will be putting a new trigger on your gun and charging you for it though as was stated.

If not a bedding job and floating the barrel or maybe a new B+C stock or McMillan classic and bedding job will probably be in order. Shouldn't have to do these but most of us do these days to get a rifle where "we" want it to be. The LVSF in a 204 is a nice package if you can get her to shoot. Keep us posted on this gun's progress.

Before you get too carried away with frustration and modifications, go over to the 204 forum

.204 Forum

and scan a few pages, as those guys are strictly .204 shooters and have tried a lot of stuff... There is no sense in "re-inventing the wheel" if they have been where you are now..

I have two .204s and neither like the 40gr V-Max as well as they do the 39gr SBKs... it was just a matter of switching bullets..

Some .204s just don't like the heavier fodder... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

When a rifle shoots that bad, send it back. If they ask who adjusted the trigger, tell then a local 'smith did it.

Some advice for you new guys.

DON'T change anything on a rifle until you shoot the rifle a few times. If it shoots ~1.5" then do the adjusting, but when you get regular groups that are larger than 2.5" or 3", take it back and have the dealer send to Rem (or whoever made it).. You can void your warranted real fast and not even know it.

Why buy a new rifle and have to replace the stock (unless you "want to").

.

Thanks for all the help guys. My uncle was the one that backed the trigger down and he is a Smith. But your right i should have shot the darn thing first then start playin with it. In my defence i personally have never had a Remy that wouldnt shoot outa the box. First time for everything tho.

I'v already picked up some 32gr to try this eve when i get home. If she wont shoot them shes going back. If i have to send it back im going to try to get my money back and probley bite the bullet and order a Kimber, thats what i wanted until i saw the LVSF.

I sent my 204 LVSF back and several weeks later it returned with a simple note: Barrel lapped and recrowned. The rifle still was horrible and I made it up the ladder to a QC supervisor whom stated the rifle shot acceptable groups in-shop but stated he couldn't tell me what groups they got. The conversation ended with him telling me I bought a varmint gun and the accuracy was "good enough" for that purpose. I should add the last thing he uttered was "We don't have an accuracy gaurantee."

If it functions and shoots it's yours. They wont correct their problem. I did try every possible factory offering and dropped the trigger. I removed the pressure pads and a second stock. I droppped the trigger down and told them. I didn't catch any flak but it came back "corrected."

I ended up buying a Lilja barrel and sent ot to Clay Spencers shop and now I can drive tacks. My last Remington is just that, my last. Going custom from now on.

You said - "I read on here that alot of .204's will not shoot the 40gr Vmax."

Just so I understand your original post. You tried one bullet in one weight that you knew had had some issues being shot in 1-12 twisted barrels and declared your gun to be the problem. Why don't you send that big POS to me and I'll suffer thru shootin it.
Neither of my .204s will shoot 40 gr.Vmaxs......maybe I should be bxtchin about them. Or just maybe I would shoot any other .204 caliber bullet and find out where the real problem is.

skb2706:

Your post contains entirely too much logic and it lacks the necessary emotion to cause a potential "let's bash Brand X" discussion.

And looking for the true cause of a problem is not what most folks like to do when its so easy to just whine instead..

Havin a bad day? The guy came here looking for some help, give it to him or don't. He stated where he was with his new gun and that he was looking for some suggestions. I didn't see where he was bxtchin about anything. He has a new gun that is spraying and is concerned. I don't see the need for the attitude.

I had the same problem with a ruger m77 204. Try the 32g vmax. My 204 would shoot a group touching and the 40g would be 5 in group. Mine just wouldnt shoot the 40g.
