Remington 700 police tactical

I'm a fan of the 700 period, my first bolt gun was a 700 and I have a soft spot in my heart for them. My question is this, is the police tactical worth the extra bills? There one at the local shop for $699 and it's been a user piece. Shop owner got it from a law enforcement agency (not local). He doesn't have a shot count on it. It's been rattle canned (poorly I might add), and there is a foam pad taped to the stock for a makeshift cheek piece. I know both of these are easy fixes so no biggy. The magazine fits a little sloppy into the action in my opinion but, I've never looked at a 700 with this option before. Do you guys think it's worth a throw of the dice? Is that price reasonable? Everything I've found on gunbroker is either the wrong barrel length (this one is 26") or wrong caliber (this one is 308). Give me your opinions!!

Pass.
1. Unknown round count.
2. Probably cleaned improperly without bore guides etc.
3. Covered in spray paint.
4. Unknown accuracy.

According to Remington's website it was offered in 26" and 20". Some of the 20" versions were also fluted

I shot one of those for the Fed. BOP years ago. They had over 100 in the Armory at FLETC. with lots of issues with the detachable magazines. Nothing special on them other than the stock shape over a Varmint. An extra sling stud and a bit different grip area. Accuracy was fine with FGMM. Based on the history and poor documentation I think they are too high.

The 700P comes with the 26" barrel. It is in an H-S Precision stock and should have a 40X Trigger. I just traded mine for the Long Range 700. There is a version that they call the SPS Tactical that has a 20" barrel and comes in the Hogue stock. You should be able to buy a NIB Tactical for what they are asking for the used one. The ones with the three wide flutes are LTR's and should come in a B&C stock.

Thanks for the input guys! I think I'm gonna pass on it. If he had a range there where I could shoot it to determine accuracy I might be interested. As it sits it doesn't look as though it's had an easy life. It could be an expensive and disappointing gamble. This particular rifle doesn't have the 40x trigger. Some research showed that for a short while they were putting the 40x in this rifle off the line. This rifle has the old style 700 trigger, I checked it right off the bat because I didn't want the new style trigger. There is another shop in town that has the 308 heavy barreled varmint rifle. Instead of the hs precision stock it has the cheap remington synthetic and it has the x-mark pro trigger. It's used as well, but doesn't look to have had many rounds down the tube (the bolt shows zero wear). They're asking $500 for it. I may have to give it a closer look. I'm wanting to build a nice 308 rifle and want the action to be a 700. Eventually it would wear a nicer stock anyway. I just didn't know if the police tactical had any special accurizing tweaks from the factory that I could take advantage of.

The 700P, 700 Police and the 700PSS are all the same rifle, just called by different names depending who your talking to. The come in an H-S stock. In truth, they are just a 700 SPS varmint in a better stock and usually a better trigger that the X triggers. If you do the research, you can find this out. The SPS Tact. has the cheaper Hogue rubber stock and usually the 20" barrel. I have heard there is a 24" barrel model that has the 5R rifling out there also.

Remington has had quite a few variations of the same gun over the years.

I believe the earlier ones, up till around 2000, were the ones that had the det mag system but they didn't have the greatest record for reliably feeding.

Biggest difference between the 700P, PSS, LTR, and even the cheaper SPS, is the stock and barrel length. The 700P, PSS and LTR all came with HS Prec. stocks but they were all slightly different from one another. Some had the double palm swell some didn't. The forearm length and and its profile was different on them too.

I bought a new LTR 223 about 6 or 7 years ago and it was a great little shooter right out of the box and it easily had the sweetest factory trigger I've ever seen. The LTR has the 20in fluted barrel but the flutes are kind of a joke and they're so shallow I can barely even say it's fluted. The LTR also comes with a weird coating on the action and barrel. It kind of has a very slight texture to it and my best guess is it's to prevent any reflection from coming off of it but I don't know if that's why Remington did it or not. I like the profile and looks of the LTR stock the best. It does not have the double palm swell grip and the fore end is a little shorter and shaped different than the 700p or PSS.

I believe 223, 308, 300 Win mag, and 338 Lapua were the only rounds chambered for these guns but I'm not positive of that. It's possible they may have had some in SAUM or even Ultr Mag. along the way too. Mine is now a 223 Ack Imp and wears a new 22in. Hart 1-9 fluted barrel. I was never a big fan of the coating they put on the LTR's so when I had it rebarreled it got cerakoted black as well.
