I was trying to find some info on this rifle. Since I cant find any I thought maybe I could ask. I was kind of looking for a rifle that could both be used as a tactical model and deer rifle. I was looking at the .308. Not the .223. I cant seem to find the weight of the rifle to see if it would be too heavy to carry around all day when not shooting off the bench. Anyone know anything about this rifle? Im wanting a rifle I can deer hunt with and shoot competition with. (tryin to get into that comepetition thing) I already have a deer rifle but thats besides the point. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

One last Question. Instead of buying 2 scopes (one for deer season and one for target shooting) is there a scope that could serve as a dual purpose? If you were looking at a gun for target reasons what reticle would you go with?

Yea I held one at the local gun shop about a week ago. I dont like the feel of the rifle though. Thanks for the info on weight.
 
I have the SPS Tac. 308 and I really like it. It is shooting .75 and under at 100 with just factory Hornady ammo. I just weighed mine, and with a Zeiss 4.5x14x50 with
the sun shade it weighed 11.5lbs.
 
Dadof3 did you weigh that with the sling and bipod or anything or is that just the gun?

If it's just the gun remington's web site must have the wrong weight on it.
 
It's pricey on the rifle end but this is a sweet combination. I just set this up in the .223 with the 6-20 Burris as a calling rifle.

The Savage 10FP could be a very affordable choice too - 10 pounds with scope - which will get heavy after awhile...

I picked up a NIB 700 SPS varmint and dropped it into a HS stock, topped it with a Nikon 4.5-14x40 and it weighs 11 lbs. Too heavy for anything to go lugging through the woods. I suggest checking out something with a 20 inch barrel to shave a bit of weight if you want a heavy barrel.
 
It was just the gun scope and sling, no bipod or ammo
It was on a home dig scale it could be a litte off but I tried it three times and it came out the same.Thats why my carry rifle is my Model 7 .260
Correction on the last, I guess it is where you set it on the scale,tried it on another scal and it was just a little over 10 lbs. I didn't think the Zeiss 3 lbs. SORRY for the bad weight. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

Hey Foxy, If you want a rifle for competition shooting you will want a heavy rifle(it's just easier to steady and reduces recoil for sustained fire for periods of time).I'm sorry man but competition rigs and hunting rigs are different animals. Not to say that one couldn't be used in place of the other but you would be handicapping yourself in both disciplines even if only in the slightest degree. If you want an entry level precision rifle I would recommend a Remmy 700P or a Savage 10FP but you can upgrade the Remington easier as their are a lot of aftermarket accessories for it, but both are shooters.

Ya know chupa I didnt really think I could get away with it.
I knew I was looking at 2 different breeds of rifles. Guess Ill just stick with my 7mm for deer and have to go tactical.

Quick Question- The Savage 10fp in .308 has a 1:10 twist. Good or Bad???

getfoxy, I've got a 700 SPS Tactical rifle. It's a 223 though. The weight is listed by Remington as 7 1/2 pounds for both rifles. This is just about the same weight as a lot of sporter weight rifles. I'm pleased with the way my rifle handles and carries. Here's a good review on the 308 SPS Tactical. Also, check the forums there for posts on the SPS rifles. MI VHNTR

Just like your predator rifles,faster twist means heavier bullets with better BC's. But I thought the 10FP was a 11.25" /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif I could be wrong about that as it's been a while since I researched it.

getfoxy,it was just over 10 on regular scale,I do really like mine.The one thing you may have to do is get a better stock.I don't mind the Hogue overmold for deer hunting,I am usually either up a tree or in a shooters hut so carrying it for any length of time isn't an issue, BUT that being said the front of the stock has a lot of flex to it and off a bench or bipod it can push against the barrel,not good for comp. shooting.
 
Nope, I see you are correct. It is a 1:10. It's a fine rig to start with but as you know you will eventually want to swap out that stock.

First you have to decide what discipline you will compete in. There are dozens of different disciplines, everything from: Benchrest, Across the Course, Match rifle, Service rifle, F class, Silhouette, Long Range, Black Powder, Cartridge Black Powder, Hunter Rifle, to International rules position shooting.

Once you pick your competition, then you can look for an appropriate rifle.
