Hello everyone. Its been a while since I have asked yalls opinion on a gun so I think its about time. I am in the market for a new gun and I am torn between which one to get. I really like the looks of the Remington SPS varmint. I remembered in the past that a couple of people bought them when they came out. How do yall like them? I don't really like the 26" barrel so if I got one I would have it cut down to 22" and recrowned. I also found a good deal on a Savage Predator Hunter but I'm not sure if I would want a gun full camoed. If I got the SPS Varmint it would be in .223 and the Predator Hunter is in .22-250. If yall had to pick which would it be? Thanks

If you are going to cut it down just get the Rem. SPS Tactical in .223. I've heard great reviews on them and it would be cheaper too. The barrel would be 20" and run you like $550 or so.

Good Luck, Joel

Depends on what else you have.... If you have a 22-250 get the 223 but i would keep the barrel around 24". jmo.

Go with the Tikka T3 lite. It's Lighter, Cheaper and I would bet a hundred bucks, More accurate.

I have had 4 of them and they all shoot moa or better, Some a LOT better.

Thanks for the info guys. I don't have a .223 or .22-250 at the moment. I sold 90% of my guns at the first of the summer because I didn't shoot them. All I kept was my Remington 700 .243 and my Savage 17HMR. That is why I am looking for a gun that fits in between the two. Something like a mid range caliber.

The Savage Predator Hunter is a nice rifle, every once and a while I see them with the finish coming off though. Savage are great shooters. I would say either the SPS Tactical, Savage Predator Hunter or a Tikka for a nice lightweight stalker.

The 223 Sps Varmint will shoot groups between 3/8"-1/2" if you tweek it out.

I would think twice about cutting the barrel.

What will you be your intended use with the rifle?

Why not just by a rifle with a 22" barrel, or buy an action and have a custom barrel installed at 22". If it were me, and its not, if I bought a 26" barrel I would stick with it. It sounds like your in the market for a 223, 22-250, or 220 swift. Thats my options based on what you wrote. I would go with the 223. Ammo doesn't cost as much if you dont reload. I dont know what range your shooting, but I dont see myself taking shots out past 500. Thats just my opinion whatever its worth.

I've got an SPS Tactical in 223 and it's a nice rifle. The best part is the 1-9 twist barrel. Most of the Remington 223s are 1-12 twist with the exception of the LTR, PSS and Tactical having the 1-9 twist barrels. I did sell the Hogue OverMolded stock that came on my rifle. I replaced it with an HS Precision stock. I also gave the barreled action a coat of DuraCoat mattel black. I'll get it shot in again as soon as time permits. On a sidenote, I had a Remington 700 VS with the 26" varmint barrel. I sold it because the long, heavy barrel was not to my liking. YMMV MI VHNTR

+1 BudsGunshop.com has the SPS Tac in 223 for 543.00 delivered.
I have one and it shoots as good as any factory barrel I've seen.
They have the Hogue stock. It's not the best but it's WAY better than the SPS plastic job.
I haven't heard anybody that actually ownes one bad mouth it.
Some of the first released had a 12 twist instead of the 9 that's advertised (mine was one) so if ya want to shoot heavy bullets, ya might want to verify the twist.
Mine with the 12 twist shoots 55 and 60 V-Max's and that is fine with me.
Good Luck

Thanks for all the info guys. I decided that I am going to go with the Savage Predator Hunter for now. It is a good price and I cant seem to talk myself out of it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Maybe at the first of the year I am going to buy a gun strictly for prairie doggin but for now the Predator will cover all my needs. Thanks again for the post. I can always count on you guys here at PM!

I would look for a gun you don't have to shorten at your expense. If it's for hunting I personally would not want a real heavy gun.

I wish that Savage would make there predator rifle without the camo. I love the idea of the medium heavy barrel. I just dont care for camo guns. I went with the CZ 527 for this reason. The medium heavy makes a great compromise for me. Good luck with your choice, I am sure you will be happy what ever road you choose. Lee

Lee I would have to agree with ya about the camo. For now it will be fine but somewhere in the future I am going to have to barrel done in that stuff that you bake in the oven. I cant think what it is called. I'm sure someone knows that I am talking about. I am also going to change the stock. But that is in the future. For now the Predator will work great.

If anyone knows that that stuff is called please inform me. I just had a major brain fart and cant think of it.
