Remington 700 Tactical Build

Picked up a NIB Remington 700 Tactical today. For those not familiar short action 700 in 308 Winchester, 16 inch barrel, threaded for a suppressor, camo Houge stock on it. Not crazy about the stock but will see how it shoots. Any suggestions for a rigid conventional stock would be appreciated. Had not tried the new X Mark trigger but seems to be a marked improvement over the triggers on my other 700's. at this point thinking Leupold one piece base and rings and probably 3x9 Leupold or Vortex for scope. Bought the gun with plans to install a Thunder Beast 30SP-1 suppressor. Will update as the project comes together. Purpose of the rifle is for my 10 year old son to learn to shoot and use for big game here in Wyoming when he turns twelve. Probably a little predator calling for dad with it. Not worried about the skins. Also brought home a Spike's Tactical AR-15 lower. SBR time for this one. Noveske upper and AAC suppressor i do believe. Time to start the wintertime builds. Anyone else got winter projects on their mind.

Winter builds? Thats the time to hunt all you can. Summer is the time for building.

I put my 700 varmint in a Bell and Carlson. Same with a 25-06 I took from blind magazine to floor plate (ADL to BDL Iirc). Sold em both to fund a nightforce for my 6.5-284.

I should clarify. My winter is February to April. Summer is for camping, fishing, scouting and boating. Have lived here 20 years and still don't going out in February. Between drifted snow, howling winds cold temps I prefer to play in the garage. LOL.

Forgot to mention but 1 in 10 twist from the factory. Anyone with with load ideas? Have not ever played around with this twist in a 308 before.

If it's the houge with full bed block I like them. I like the choate tactical stocks also. They are comfy to shoot prone. I love the bobby hart lrt stocks.

Hehe I'm only teasing. Most of us south of the Mogillion rim in AZ don't go outside if it snows enough to stick (think inches of snow).

Edit to add load ideas.

My wife has the Savage Lady Hunter, can't remember the twist and I load up the 150 Nosler Accubond and BT for her, with 42.5 grains of varget in lapua brass with 210gm primers. She shot her first mule deer earlier this week at 95 yards with the accubonds. Maybe a good option for your boy, fairly mild recoil, even out of the lightweight Lady Hunter. I did add a limbsaver slip on pad to the original pad to take a little extra thump out.

My remmy liked the 168 Bergers from HSM. I loaded some 168 Bergers myself but don't remember the charge.

I'd add a break if the 10 year old is going to shoot it. For some, the 308 packs a pretty good punch. At least lighter weight bullets. JMO

No brake pyscodog since I plan on suppressed only out of it. Wyoming just passed law to allow suppressed hunting this past year. My suppressor s for the 22 caliber cartridges seem to take as much recoil out as a good brake with a lot less noise.

Put a H-S Precision stock on mine. 1st shot was 2" low, adjusted the scope and the next three were less than 1" with 2 shots touching. These were a little high and right. Adjusted the scope down. The next 2 shots were touching a bit to the right. Adjusted the scope again and the next 2 were dead on with the 2 shots touching. The only rounds shot out of it have been ultramax reloads from Midway with 162 gr. hpbt.

I don't disagree about the money and time aspect Furhunter. But I already own an AAC M4-2007 to put on the SBR build. Had I known where the quiet rifle bug was going to lead me I would have calibred up. For the 308 I am torn between going for a 30 cal can and using it for 243, 260, 280 or going for a 338 caliber can so I have the flexibility to go down but also up.

Didn't know you already had the AAC can. Your post sounded like you were getting both.

I'm in the same boat, had I known how much I like shooting a rifle suppressed I would have just bought the 30 cal can the first time. But ohh no, I had to do it the expensive way with 2 of them.

I would have no need for a 338 can.... Don't even want a rifle with that much recoil!
