Remington 700 vtr in 204

Does anyone have any experience with the 700 vtr in a 204? I have a oppurtunity to do some trading for one but not sure if its worth trading for. Thanks for any input.
 
I had one, changed out the stock it shot well. The only thing is the muzzle break on it is not nesscary and it just hurts your ears.

Electric Blue! Gotta love it.

I'm looking at one in .223 I like the -9 twist it has and after you cut that stupid break off, you have a nice short ~20" barrel.

I have the VTR triangle tube on an AR. It shoots great.
 
Great looking rifle. I guess the thing I'm wondering about is the 204 caliber. I havent had any experience with it and have read a few threads talking about being "fed up" with it. Is the 204 a little light for coyotes or is it plenty? Thanks again for the replies.
 
.204 is great or yotes. Don't listen to those guys that say otherwise. Stick to hp bullets and they kill them dead everytime

DONT beleive everything you read on here! there aint nothing wrong at all with the 204 ruger, just use the right Bullet for the intended purpose and Hit were your supposed to. everyone that bad mouths them is the ones that cant shoot...
 
The .204 has two short comings. Both were given to it by it's creators.


1] 1-12 twist, that is to slow for 40gr and above bullet weights. It should have been a 1-10 twist.


2] 90% of the bullets available in .204 are made for varmints. That is, chucks, PD,s crows and such. Hornady, one of the creators, makes a 45gr soft point that would be great for coyotes but it needs a 1-10 twist not the factory 1-12.

There are bullets to be found and you can make it work for coyotes. It just won't come as easy as it will with other offerings.

The .204 is a fine little cartridge for what it was intended for but coyotes are not one of them as it is currently offered.

If you really want a .204 Ruger, do yourself a favor and build a custom with a faster twist. It will make all the difference.
 
The 45gr soft points work well in the 1-12 twist barrels. They work because they are a shorter bullet then the other 40'gr bullets. That being said 40 gr Berger bullets shoot real nice out of my 1-12 twist barrel
 
It all comes down too if your rifle like's the 40's!! the 12 twist is fast enough to shoot any of the 40's just fine, just depends on if your rifle likes the load/Powder/primer being used.
 
I just set up another 204 this week and plan to shoot 32's in it mainly for fox as I have alot more 32's than 40's on hand. I have several 20 cal guns 20vt and 204 all with 1:12 twist and they all shoot both 39 and 40 gr bullets very well. I like 40 gr for coyote but have killed a couple with the 32gr vmax. I am using the 204 for my nite hunting. Very happy with the 204.
