I have a chance to buy one of these in great condition but no front or rear sights. Seller says no evidence of sights ever being there and it looks and is marked like a factory barrel. 22 inches long.

Did the factory ever produce this rifle without iron sights?

Thanks,

I had a 721 in .270 for a long time. Great rifles. I sold it a couple of years ago and I do not remember it having sights on it or plugs where they would have been before.

This is from memory so I could be wrong, but I recall two, one a friend's, and one an uncle's, and I'm pretty sure neither ever had iron sights.

Have a 30/06 in 721 that I put a Douglas Prem. barrel on. The original barrel had both rear and front sights. Have seen a few more original 721's that had both rear and front sites.

As far as I know the 721 had a lump completely around the barrel for the rear site base and the front site base was machined from the original barrel stock not screwed on like the later 700 barrels. Check the stock a few inches ahead of the reciever to see if there is a filled area. The barrel might have had the bases machined off and reblued.

All of the early 721 and 722 rifles had the "dog knot" for the rear sight and a soldered on front sight. The later models (right before the 700 came out) were issued with 2" less barrel and no "dog knot". I have never encountered a factory version with a "clean" barrel.

Mine has front and rear sights and my Dad bought it in the fifties. I used to shoot the gun with a pivot mount scope, until I bought a 300 Win mag. The thing I remember most about it was that it was a kicker.

One thing you should check is the extractor. If I rememember right the 721 extractors are hard to find if they need to be replaced. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif I an sure someone out there has more information on them. The only problems that I have seen with the Remington bolt actions is point of impact changes. Glass bedding, and floating the barrel cures that. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif Great guns.
