Remington 870 special purpose?

What is the different between the Remington 870 special purpose and the express?

The one I am looking at is an 870 special purpose magnum turkey in an older camo patten I think it is called Green Leaf camo. It looks to be in very good shape and has the fiber sights or would I be better off with a used express also looks to be in very good shape. What would be a fair price for the special purpose.

The special purpose versions were more polished, particularly the inner parts than express models at the factory. Also on the few i have owned the receiver was milled with the groove on tip like a wingmaster rather than rounded over like an express.

If the stock is wood the earlier ones were walnut, not the lesser quality of wood found on the later special purposes and expresses, also had a little nice recoil pad on them

If the price were similar I would get the special purpose.

Aren't the Special Purpose shotguns all synthetic with a matte type finish on the barrel and receiver?

I have an 11-87 SP Slug Gun that's great. I just bought a new 26" bird barrel for it too and a straight stock so it can double as a coyote gun.

One thing I'll say though, the beads on the SP guns suck.

The finish on the Express's are prone to rust. Of the three I've had all would rust even if left in a bucket of oil. The only one I have left, a 20 gauge youth model I bought for the grand kids I keep soaked with a good gun oil and you can wipe rust off it every time you take it out of the safe.

Thanks for the info. I did manage to find one on Guns America this is not the one I am looking at. The one i'm interested in only has an aftermarket turkey tube but it dose have fiber optic rifle sights on it. I think I found out who the previous owner was and it's someone I know so I am going to give him a call and see why he dumped it. Here is a link to the 870 I found on guns America.

Well I ended up with a different 870 it was still an 870 Special Purpose Turkey but it had mossy oak camo without the bright green the last one had. It came with a full choke tube the guy I purchased it from kept the turkey tube for his new 1187 So I will probably pick up a turkey tube before season. For now I need to get some buck shot and make it to camp and give it a try. I did scrounge some 4 turkey and some 0 buck so I will pattern them just for fun also.
