I am redoing my dads old model 700 for him and was wanting to replace his old scratched up stock with a nice wood one any ideas? On what manufacturer never done nothing like this before so need a little help on a good stock been looking at Boyd's wood stocks are they any good or are they another brand i should look at

Keep an eye in the classifieds. They're available often. (24hourcampfire too)

Boyds has their laminates and some good looking walnut options.

Stockysstocks.com has some great options as well.

Is the stock so far gone that it can't be refininished? I've done a couple refinishes and it was much easier then I would have thought.

No the stock could be refinished i think just didnt no about the black cap on the end of the stock so thats why i was just going to by one and plus it would give it a nice face lift

If it is dads then I'm sure he has some memories with it. Keep the original stock and just refurbish it. Strip away the coating with some paint stripper, sand down and fill in any cracks then re-coat it.

Does anybody now how to refinish the black cap on the end of the stock looks to be plastic or some sort of plastic looks like some kind of clear coat is coming off of it

Is a good place to look They do nice work and six weeks to build you one. Boyd's are nice too. I have refinished a lot of old Remington stocks and recut the checkering. They always come out nice. Buy yourself a book on refinishing gun stocks.

Yes, the cap is plastic, but don't get nervous. When I do a hand rubbed oil finish with the plastic cap, I just sand the cap with #800 grit paper or #1000 grit if you like. Just polish the cap and it will be fine. If you use a urethane or some other top coat, just coat over it like it was wood. Make sure you clean the plastic with denatured alcohol before coating though.

I second the refinishing it yourself ideas. With a little bit a research, anybody can refinish a gun stock. All you need is a little time and patience, and you can do it. Lots of information on the web. Good luck!

Refinishig the old stock is a great idea. But... If a face lift is what your looking for, Stockysstocks has some replacement stocks with wood and carbon fiber inserts that are really nice. Some have aluminum blocks also.
