Remington Long Range 7mm Rem Mag.

Good shooting!

At the Elberton Gun club, they have a 400 yd rifle range. We sat up 20 of the Mini Clay pigeons that are only 2 3/4" in dia, not like the large ones you are normally used to thinking of.

I ran 20 of the mini's without missing with a 8-32 scope. We cooled the barrel every 10 shots with a 50/50 mix of rubbing alcohol/water. Then my buddy shot the pieces that were left that were half to quarter the size of the 2 3/4" mini clay pigeon.

The secret: bullet seating depth is HUGE...can't stress this enough!

Best deal Remington has selling now. A $600 gun. But they only have 4 calibers I think. And all long actions. Wish they would offer more in short action calibers. Plus I think Remington has a $40 rebate on 700 models. Unless the long range is exempt.

the 700 long range is a lot of rifle for the money. i want hear a report. (as much as i like nate's 7mm) i prefer a brake.

Same caliber?? I'm waiting on my scope. Should be here Saturday or Monday. I already tweaked the trigger some and have brass ready but not made up my mind what I want to try first for bullets.

162 Amax, 160 Berger VLD...

The Meopta came in today, got it mounted and found three loaded rounds of something I had in the past. Probably 168 grain something hp. First shot was high right, did a bit of knob turning and the other two were a bit low but within 3/4 inch of each other. Hmmmm, might have a shooter here. Recoil was actually very manageable. The recoil from my 700P in 308 was actually a little bit harder kicking. Maybe just my imagination. Now to go to work!!

What are you gonna feed it powder wise? Don't get all hung up on touching lands either. Mine is just over book oal and shoots great there. I load my 162s at 3.405-.410 I run h4831sc and have never wanted to use anything else since. I started with reloader 19 and 22

Retumbo gets the 162g SST, fed 215, touching lands at 3130 into tiny groups, no kidding. A max would work but I gave up on them pretty quick after shooting the 162g SST at 300 yards in 1" groups.
This is a "parts gun", ebay 26" SS barrel, blued 700 BDL action from a pawn shop, Remington LSS stock, Black diamond 8-32 bought used off of ebay, Harrells $35 muzzle break.

On another note, we used to have a "Big Gun Coyote Hunt" in our truck. There were usually 4 of us in the truck, two in the front, two in the back. Everyone had a magnum of some kind or 270 or '06 with varmint bullets. I shot a 7 mag with the 115g Speer hp, and today I would use the 120g V max with at 3500 with R#22.

These Rem long range would also make a great long range rock chuck rifle!

I wish that DAA would make a Big Gun Video of chucks exploding with V max's.

Its a long story so I'll give the short version.

Several years ago, I had a T/C Encore with a 7mag heavy barrel. I was shooting Sierra 100gr hollow points. Earlier that morning, I had shot a scrub buck and he was DRT!!! Went out for the evening hunt and about an hour after being in the stand, a lone coyote came to the edge of the field and just sat down. I put the cross hairs on the tip of her nose and squeezed off a round. My My My!! My buddy calls on the radio, no cell phones then, and asked me what I shot. I told him and he says bring it to camp, I might have it mounted After a brief argument about him "really" wanting this coyote, I said OK, I'll bring it to ya. When I got to camp, I drug the yote to him and said "Here's your coyote". He said you blew it F'in head off. I replied, I tried to tell you that you don't want the coyote but you insisted. Its all yours Buddy!!! I still get a chuckle everytime I think about that.

115g Speers at 3400 shot a hole through a coyote about the size of a silver dollar, not bad like you would think. My conclusion was that the jacket on the 115 is very tough.

I do believe that the120g V max would be very explosive.

Well, the 162 SST with Rel.22 aren't doing so well. First time out with 3 of each 63,64,65 grains of R-22 and just a WAG at over all length, groups were all over the place. Major flyers in all three groups. Finally found the lands and went back with the same loads but touching the lands. Groups were a little better with the best load at 65gr touching. Three shot group was about an inch at 100yds. More research is definitely needed. Its still new and probably doesn't know its a rifle yet so I'm not discouraged. FYI, recoil isn't near what I expected, very manageable.
