I know there have been similar posts ,but, I had to ask . What are your opinons about the Savage model 10 precision carbine and the Rem 700 LTR , both in 308? I had just about settled on buying the Rem. until I looked into the Savage rifles . Looking for the most accurate gun for the money out of the box for deer hunting and target shooting out to 200 yds or so .

It all depends on what feels best to you , its like the which is better ford or chevy debate . I would prefer the Savage ( Im a savage fan ) I don't like Remington I have my reasons , the savage rifle is known for being a accurate weapon as well as Remington ( some of um some not ) it all depends on what you are looking for. pick both up fondle them both for a while and then pick . sorry I could not help you but what ever your choice good luck

I really like the looks and feel of both guns .I have a couple of 700's now , a 30'06 BDL and a 243 CDL . Both good guns but neither are tack drivers . Both have always shot as well as to be expected for bone stock guns .

woodpecker,
Either of the guns you mention should serve you well as a deer rifle at the range you specified with good quality ammo. But if you want the smallest group you can get on paper I'd put my hard earned money on the Savage.

then you may wnat to think about the Savage and see what a bone stock gun can do not saying that it is a granted that it will be a shooter but given their track record it's a good chance that you will be suprised

I have had 3 LTR's, two 308's and one 223. One of the 308's was a beast, three shots in a clover leaf at 200 yds with handloads. The second was fair at best. The 223 was a finicky POS and never shot good. The 223 was sold at a substantial loose and glad to be rid of it. The first 308, well, wish I still had it. The second 308, well, it was just fair, don't miss it at all. I have three bone stock Savages and love all three. Just an opinion.
P.S. I still have two Remmy's that shoot very well, but both have custom barrels and worked over actions and triggers.

My 700P LTR in .223 shoots great, I adjusted the trigger to 2# 9oz. NOTE: My barrel is 20", lightly fluted and in a H.S. Precision stock, full length aluminum bedding block.

I see the current 700P LTR is spec by Remington at 26" in .223, .308 7 .300 Win Mag.

I also have a 700 HB in .308 with H.S. Precision full length
bedding butg not an LTR. Shoot great.

All that to say this both these rifles are fairly heavy->9# w/out scopes. Imagine the Savage would be a shooter and possibility lighter than these H.S. Precision, HB rifles.

i have the savage precision 10 carbine its cuts the same holes 20" medium bull its great .everyone of my buddies have offered to buy it & i really want an ar .if didnt shoot so [beeep] good it would of been replaced .

I would like to buy a gun that you don't have to rework to make shoot well . I guess this may not be realistic without buying a high dollar custom gun .The last few years I have been using a T/C Prohunter in 243 . It shoots everything from 80-100 gr. very well . Neither of the 700's I own will shoot with it .Is there a a production 308 gun on the market that will consistantly shoot .5 " MOA without reworking the barrel , trigger ,action , etc. ?

Im liking my ltr so far, real handy with the 20" barrel. Shoots around 1" at 100 with some loads I threw together to hunt with and about 1.5" with some cheap ppu ammo.

I bought a new LTR in .308 some years back and it has to be one of my best shooting factory rigs beside my Sako. One thing it does not do is ectract or feed as smoothly as my Sako. The camming surface of the bolt is not mated up perfectly with the receiver camming surface and has some "denting" on the bolt handle due to this.

It's a great gun but ta the prices the LTRs are commanding these days, I think there are better options out there if you have no plans on customizing it.

Never ownded a Remington other than a shotung but have ownded several Savages now and all of them shot MOA straight from the box. The accu-trigger is a plus too. I have shot a couple Remingtons and while they all shot good I would still go with the Savage. Good luck.

Look at the remington 5R Milspec 308, probably your best bet. Remington 700VS, 700P are worth a look and perhaps just a hair behind the 5R.
I went with the Savage 10FCP, I was looking for a similar firearm, not a gun that seems to fit what you are looking for, other than potential accuracy though, not something most would want to cart around hunting.

These all have longer barrels then it seems you are looking for though, if you are looking at .5MOA, you may get it with Match loads like Federals gold medal, otherwise you will most likely have to reload.

You are looking at a couple that have that .5 potential, but, you're dealing with factory guns, you can't really know if a gun will shoot .5MOA unless the manufacturer guarantees it. You may buy a 10PC that shoots Federal Gold Medal in .2MOA groups, then your buddy buys one and his best is .7MOA.

Unless it is guaranteed it isn't guaranteed... As we have read from previous posts as well

I have a Savage 10 FP that my wife & son bought for me this year. It comes stock w/a 24" heavy barrel, sweet recoil pad, and it is also pillar bedded. My rifle shoots sub MOA groups and has shot under 1/2 MOA groups when I've really done my part.

Not bad mouthing the Remington, they are a great weapon but I can only speak for the Savage because that is what I own.
