I have one leaning in a corner right now. It came from a friends grandfather. I have never seen anything like it, This rifle is in 308 win. and it has a 17 5/8 inch vented rib barrel. Anyone have any history or value info? More interested in the history. Thanks.

Good rifles. Quite the collector item. That is the action the XP100 pistols were made on. The bolt release is tricky, you have to reach in the recoil lug rail with a small screwdriver. I have a Mohawk version in 6 mm. They were quite accurate. In the 600 with a vent rib they are running above 500 dollars lately. Just off memory, around 70's manufacture date.

My brother has one in 308 Win. EXTREMELY accurate rifle,
but it will put the smack down on you when you pull the
trigger. There is a guy that goes by the handle "Moosetrot"
that has one in 6mm Rem. I believe, and to hear Ray tell it,
it is a deer killin' machine. I think I would prefer one
in 6mm Rem., given that I have shot my brother's 308 Win,
but either one would be a nice addition to the gun rack.

Other way around - it was XP-100, M-600, Model 7, XR-100.

.

Nit picker-Point was they USE the same style action. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

Well... if you'd stick to the 308, then it would all make since /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

I had a friend that had one in .222 years ago and he was left handed and shot it like a semi auto......we would always laugh fox hunting about how fast he got the shots off...SM

Good to hear from you, Squeeze!

The Model 600's were made from 1964-67. As Squeeze says, my 6mm truly is a deer killing machine.

As far as that 308 goes...I think you ought to pack it up and send it to me! Very bad gun! Dangerous! Melts in the rain!
I can dispose of it for you!

RR,
I've still got a Mohawk in .222. Havn't shot it in probably five years, but it shot very well. It was my favorite "truck gun" for vermin up to 250 yds or so.... I probably need to break it out again for some sod puppies! I've just been having too much fun with the 204 and the swift.

Two friends have them, one in 30-06 and the other in 6.5mm Rem mag. Very nice guns and both are shooters, but you dang well better be wearing ear protection !!

RC is right, the bolt release is very tricky. Unless someone shows you it'll take forever to find it. Bad design in my opinion, you need a small screwdriver or a slim but strong knife blade to release it, and good eyes.

They've achieved some collector status and the value is steady increasing.

I made a tool out of a piece of wire coathanger for the bolt release. I think Brownells has an aftermarket external release, but don't hold me to that.
I never saw one in an '06, I thought all the 600/660 actions were short and mediums.

Great Rifle, I have one in 243 and one in 6mm .great deer getters and varments. We go and shoot ground squrrels very accurate both of them. As someone said the 308 is a kicker, my friend was going to sell his and i shot it about 8-10 times and i suffered

I've had 3 model 600's, 243 and 308's. The first one I rebarreled to 7mmx308 and still have it. My recollection of the 600's is that they were all a different length, short action, right hand actions, even different than the M7 or 700. Mine shot well but I never did like the looks of the bolt handle.

Flyrod,

I'm positive about the one in 6.5mm Rem Mag. My next door neighbor has the other one and I'm about 90% sure it's an -06. He's out of town right now, but when he gets back I'll double check on the caliber of his gun. It's entirely possible I'm wrong, but I know it's a 600, I've handled it several times, but never shot it.

OOPS, I was wrong again. His son was out in his yard so I went over and looked at the gun. It's a 600 alright, but it's NOT a 30-06, it's a 35 Rem. I stand corrected, sorry.

I had a 600 in a .222 back in the late 70's for a 'neighborhood silencer' in my patrol car and sold it after I got my hands on a M1 Carbine.

Wish I had it back... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

the rem 600's were and still are great little guns. I have a 222 and a 308. both are very accurate. 308 actually kicks a little bit. the 222 was my truck gun for over 20 years and accounted for more stuff being shot than I can remember. You won't find one in 30/06 though. Only short actions. I still like my 600's better than my model 7. Even like the bolt handle. Never had a problem with my triggers, and would not send them back to the factory when they tried that. They would fix it for your alright. Fix it so you can't pull the trigger hard enough to make it go bang. Only took one firearm returned to remington to learn that lesson.

Maybe .308???? They are a short action gun, no 06 in them. I got mine when I was 13 in .308 and I still use it as my deer gun. My Dad has one in 6mm. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif both are tack drivers. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif
