Remington Model 770 question

Hey guys,
Saw a Remington Model 770 in .270 on sale locally for $259 and thought it was a good price. You guys have any experience with these. (Don't really need it but what the hay)

Very low grade rifle from what I have experienced, witnessed and was told about. Nothing but junk really, I do not know why Remington would put out such crap with their quality and reputation.
For that money go a little higher and get a Savage Axis or Stevens model 200. Low cost rifles, but really good made.
I have a Savage Axis in 308 and it is solid, paid 277.00 at Wal-Mart for it and put on a Nikon Pro staff scope.

Good luck

Just because it is cheap doesn't change the fact that the rifle is still junk. I would pass on it if it was a nickel.

I don't understand... if it "shoot real well", why did you have to put a new barrel on it to improve the accuracy?

I think they are junk, and at $259, they are about $200 over priced for what you get.

Save your pennies and get something decent, like a clean, used 700.

I put the new barrel on because I shoot in competitions. We custom make our guns. I put a new barrel and a new stock on it.

For $20 more you can get a Savage Axis and shoot MOA groups all day long.

I have an Axis in .223 and I was just out to the range on Friday. Shot a 1.25 inch 5 shot group at 200 (Repeat 200!) Yards with a variable wind blowing. Again, that would be a 5 shot group, not a get-lucky 3 shot group. Not bad for a sub $300 rifle with no aftermarket parts.

For just a little more beyond the Axis, you can get the Ruger American with an adjustable trigger.

Sorry, but BS! You didn't buy a 770 for ANY kind of competition. If you had, you promptly got laughed off the firing line for being supreme idgit.

C'mon, Cat Shooter. I think most intelligent people would agree that if you buy a Remington 770 and replaced the stock, barrel, and action with those from a Remington 700, what you have is a fine Remington 770. It just doesn't happen to actually use any parts from the 770.

You know it makes sense.

Shoot occasionally with another retired gent who joined our range when he got into shooting about 2 years ago. He doesn't hunt, just shoots paper up to 600 yds. His first rifle was a 770 Remington. He regrets buying it. He would like a new stock for it, better suited for shooting from benchrest....none made. I have a decent reputation for making rifle stocks and he asked me to make a stock for it. I declined simply because I'd have a challenge dealing with the design of its receiver/magazine/trigger guard. Another thing he wanted to do was replace the factory trigger which as he said, "sucks" ....nope, no one makes one. What's kinda humorous, he'd put an inexpensive high powered Firefield scope on it when he tried his hand on our 400/600 yd range....maybe $140 cost. Had a problem with the screws in the Firefields turrets for resetting them to zero and then bought a high powered Nightforce to replace it. I almost had to bite my tongue to keep from laughing when I first saw the Nightforce on the rifle.

I bought one in 270 for less than 300 a few years ago, sold it unfired at auction for close to 700 a couple months later. Best gun ever.

I got one from a guy for 200 bucks in 243. It was a decent beginner grade hunting rifle, accuracy was good enough to be not totally upset with. The trigger lightened up fairly easy. Don't expect high dollar performance from a low dollar rifle and it'll work for you, I think it would be perfect for a truck gun on the cheap. I wish they made them with sights. Gave mine to my step brother for his kids to shoot. I wouldn't go out with the intentions of buying one new. I'd buy a Stevens 200 instead. If its what you got then go with it. People always laughter when you show up with a 500 dollar total setup and shoot but I bet they wouldn't drop their rig in the dirt to prove that 3000 dollar gun is better. Myself included

The 770 as I remember was a package gun with scope installed and bore-sighted to get you on paper at 50 yards. The Remington commercials showed two guys at the range firing away at a distant target, one kept making statements about the rifle in question form and the shooter would reply between shots with "yep". These were bought in my local "mart" the night before opener as fast as you could fill out the paperwork until they were sold out. Exactly what Remington intended, to sell them.
