Remington R-15 magazine ?

I just got an R-15 for Christmas from my father-in-law.

So far I really like the gun and it seems to be a shooter!!! Even with the bad factory trigger I still was able to shoot a 5 shot all touching group at 125 yards.

The one problem I am having is with the magazine. When it is fully loaded with 5 shells it won't let the bolt fully close. It works flawlessly when only loaded with 4 or less shells. I called remington and they said it is just because the magazine is new and needs to be broke-in some!!??

So with that said; here is my question......
Has anyone else ran into this problem and after some time did it resolve itself?

Mine did the same thing. I don't have a lot of bullets down the tube. I had to let the bolt slam home when I first got it. Now it goes in like it should.

Mine does it with a 20 round mag loaded with 20. Oil the bolt slide good and it should get better. Use the forward assist if needed.

I took the whole gun apart; cleaned and oiled it before ever shooting it. It won't let it shut far enough for the forward assist to work either.

It is most definitely the magazine. I am hoping remington is right that the mag will 'break-in' and start working.

Anyone else with a r-15 have the same trouble when new?

That happens with some mags,Military normally put 19 rounds in a 20 to prevent that.I never had to break in the mag.R-15's are no different than any other AR-15.

I knew they were not any different than any other AR. In fact as most all know the r-15 is made by bushmaster.
I was/am trying to find out if I got a bad mag from remington or if the mag on most all the r-15's need a break-in period to work properly.

It does sound like the mag may be defective. Mine worked fine when new. Having experience with Remington customer service, I would advice you to just put 4 in the mag. Aftermarket mags can be found very cheap.

Curt; I don't have any other mags at this time. I do have a 10 rounder on order that should be here soon though.

HunterBear; thanks for the input on your mag when new.

NastyDaddy; since bushmaster makes the gun I am sure it is a bushmaster mag as well.

Do most bushmaster mags need a break-in period before being able to fully load them?

Pro_hunt, I think you will find that most mag's that are loaded to the max will give you that little glitch, I usually load the mag's full and then remove 1 round and then seat the magazine and chamber a round. I've had the same problem with magazines that are crammed full. I've got several different kinds of magazines and they all do that in my AR.

Hi All
I am the proud owner of a R-15 also, and I noticed the same thing,I have one mag I use for hunting.it started when I bought the rifle,I had problems getting the forward assist to work, with the mag in or out!!Now I am not an idiot,I own a RockRiver Ar heavy barrel that works flawless when loading with forward assist.I took it back to the dealer and he said why do you need to use the forward assist? Well I told him I am a Coyote hunter and slamming the bolt to load is not always an a good idea.I also had two uncles who fought in Vietnam, they said thats how they would load quietly when in the bush, and it works great on the RockRiver!!! Well here is the real kicker,if I put my bolt assembly from the RockRiver into the R-15 the forward assist works great!!!! I even sent it back to Remington, they told me that if it loads by slamming shut, that is how it was designed!! Why have the forward assist then? Well it seems the more rounds that I shoot the better it seems to get. I love the gun other wise and I have killed five yotes with it. My RockRiver has a Match two stage trigger that is just awsome, however I do like the R-15 trigger.
What I did was take the trigger out and just polish the surfaces of it with a fine Arkansas stone, this really helped give me a smooth consistant pull.

With my R15, I converted the factory 5 round to a 9 round by removing the spring in the mag and cutting half the spring out. It was only acting as a spacer to limit the mag. to 5. Now I can carry 9 rounds and don't have to carry a spare clip afield. Works flawless.

I see. Your mag shouldn't need to be broken in, in my opinion but it likely will work better with use. Might just be something with that particular mag.

I just put new followers in close to 100 USGI mags recently. Many of them were Bushmaster mags. I noticed minor differences here and there while disassembling and reassembling them. Some were better constructed than others. Bound to happen in something mass produced.

Good hunting

Mass produced by a number of different manufacutres with their own quality control. They might meet minium standards but some companies give a little more (pride).
