Man I was all excited when I discovered this gun and wanted a 223/12ga combo. Well I called the gunshop where I buy alot of guns and talked to the owner. I asked about the quality and he said, "Well it isn't the greatest. It's like a cheap Russian Import". Well that kinda turned me off. Man it would be so cool to have 12 ga and varmint caliber in same gun and what the f&%$ is Remington doing bringing in cheap Russian crap? Any of you tried this gun? Do you have any suggestions for a combo gun that is better quality? I would like to have a 243/12 ga Mag but don't know of any being manufactured.

Let me know if you have any ideas.

Rem bought out,or got them to make, the Bakail shotgun line. It's the same inexpesive gun,but alot of people are happy with them.

First off I dont have experiance with the SPR combo's. But the Remington SPR's are made by Baikal. I searched for a rugged Duck gun that was gas opperated and could take the abuse of duck swamps, and still cycle 3 1/2 inch reliably. I came up with the Baikal MP-153 , but they stopped importing to the US. Then Remington started importing the SPR line. And behold! There was my MP-153. Only Now it was called the SPR453. Same gun, parts are interchangeable.

So I bought one. New SRP453. I was excited when it arrived a week befor my first duck trip of the season. I opened it up... It was the ugliest gun I've ever seen. I put it together, after cleaning the 3LBS of cosmoline off it. Put a fiber optic sight on and went out back of my buddies shop to pattern.

It fits right, swings right, and cycles everything I feed it. Its ugly as all get out, but it can bang around in a boat, get dropped in the mud , and lay in an inch of water in the bottom of my kayak. And it still cycles. I havent had a gas auto do that befor. Hunted it hard that first week, and did not clean it once on the trip, and did not have 1 single problem. Not a single gas auto I've used can do all that.

Ill give the Russian Baikals(now Remington SPR's) a 0 for fit and finish, but a 12 out of 10 for a shotgun you can abuse and it still works.

Blaser makes your .243/12ga combo, but you will have to purchase through a Blaser dealer. Blaser firearms are top notch German quality, but then again you get what you pay for. www.blaser.de

I'll second the nod on Baikal, then Spartan and now they are even droppping the Spartan name and just calling them Remington SPR.

I'm a shotgunner and nothing is more important than natural fit for swing, comb for vertical adjustment. If the gun's comb is wrong you will shoot high or low. That being said the Comb and lenghth of pull has always been the same as any Remington.

About 15 years ago I wanted an O/U shotgun but did not want to spend $2000 and find out I didn't like them in the field...let alone scratching up a $2000 shotgun in the field. I looked at a bunch of shotguns under $1000 and the Baikal fit me best and at only $350. Single trigger/replaceable chokes.

To my surprise it became my favorite shotgun of 8, and is my go to. It was a little tight and wore in niceley about 2500 rounds. It is above 8000 rounds now and still functions fine.

Everyone who uses it, goes and buys one....but they are spenging $500-$600 now.

To sum up my experience I wouldn't hesitate to buy their product. It is not a Wheatherby for finish to be sure...but funtion can't be beat.

BTW the O/U combos are the same gun, just different barrel tubes.

I just bought my son a new 20ga o/u for when he gets older...he's 5. It was a new Baikal...their still out there and only spent $400.
