Remington XP 100

I've been "this close" to getting one a number of times, but now I'm serious. I'd like to hear from those who own one (or a Savage Striker, etc) and hear how you set it up and run it.

A couple of years ago I watched an old man school a crowd (me included) at 200 yards with what looked to be a bone stock .221 Fireball with the shorter barrel and a 2-7 scope on top. Groups were just over 1" all day long at 200 yards, and a muzzle flash the size of a VW didn't hurt my impression either.

I'm drooling over a few on Gun Broker right now but haven't bid on one.

Calibers I'm not too particular about. I'm thinking any of the following: .221 Fireball, .223, 6mmBR, 7mmBR, 6PPC - I don't really think I need a 35 Whelen for this thing

I don't care about open sights, I'm going straight for a scope but don't know which one yet.

I'm also leaning towards the longer barrel but maybe it doesn't matter.

Any thoughts from the gallery on what I should look for/demand, etc?

Thanks

I had two - the first was the standard 10.5" FireBall that I bought when they first came out, and I had a ball with it - it was outrageously accurate. I had a Leupold pistol scope on it, and whacked a lot of PD's with it, and a fair number of woodchucks too.

I am still sorry I sold it.

The second was one of the first 7mm BRs that they made - it was accurate, but in those days, cases were a nightmare to make, and I didn't care for the cartridge (still don't).

I would love to get one of the custom shop XP-100's in 221 FB or 223 with a 15" barrel.

.

I have two of them 221 fireball and the 35 Remington. The fireball is just great. I load 357 bullets 158gr in the 35 Remington. It does not shoot as well as the fireball but better than Marlin rifle. Scope are the best way to go. I have 4X Pistol Leupolds M8's on both. If you get a 35 Remington there is different load data for the pistol. That is why they call it the "wrist breaker".

I would like a 6mm but I just can not change these two. They are to nice.

I tried very hard to talk myself into an XP, but I ended up going Contender.

I love the XPs and probably will get one someday, but I'll never shake my dislike of that funk-o-licious fake woodgrain plastic stock. And yes, I know that same stock was what made the Nylon 77 a cult classic.

My main concern with an XP would be the barrel being shot out by being used for high volume shooting, sillouttes, etc. I'd certainly want to have a smith scope it and make sure it wasn't a lemon before I paid good money for it.

Obviously many of the caliber choices are not great if you're limited to off the shelf ammo.

Good luck.

From that thread and some time pouring over my reloading manuals it appears I may not get away with just owning one..

I bought an xp at a gunshow. It was the newer rear grp type in 223. Bought it cheap on Saturday, made a few hundred bucks on Sunday, never fire it. Stupid me! I also had a Savage Striker in 308. It shot one inch groups at 100. Sold it cause I thought it should shoot better. Again-Stupid me! I wished I had either or both back.

aftcg,
pay attention to xphunter he knows XPs inside and out.
You can go big or small and full out customs.

Back in my IHMSA days I had an XP in 7-08 caliber. It was factory made in 7BR but that was back 30 years ago and they did not sell the brass (or ammo) and you had to make it from .308 Win so I took the easy route and had it rechambered.

Let me tell you, with the factory nylon stock that thing hurt! I wore a handball glove with the index finger cut off. But for sure, it had no problems at all knocking over 200 meter rams.

After I quit that sport I traded the XP for a Daytona model Yamaha RD400. That was a lot more fun.

Rusty, that's funny. I started with the RD400 and came this way.

XP, I'll take any enabling advice you care to offer. The word on stocks for example. I've debated buying a lower cost XP and upgrading, but it seems that if I could find a proven shooter that already has a nice mid grip stock and match barrel I'd be money ahead to just pay more up front.

Perhaps I could PM you some of the gun broker links I'm looking at and get your opinion?

As far as intended purpose I had always pictured it as a varmint gun. But with 6 and 7mm options if it could double as a deer weapon that would be a huge bonus. As a guy who has always owned a .243 and considered it great for both applications perhaps I should lean towards 6ppc or 6mmBR.

H-S is my favorite stock, as long as you reinforce the forend area if you are going to use a bi-pod (which I do a lot).
I also open up the area where the top of my thumb knuckle as there is not enough clearance for me.
You can order both H-S and McMillan stocks solid, although it adds weight. Depends on the cartridge you are considering.

How far would you like to be able to kill varmints?

God help anyone who touched off an XP-100 chambered in .35 Whelen

I have had 4 XPs one of the 10" originals and a 7mmBR and I currently have 2 in the .35 remington. I would like to get one of the .35s rebarreled in a .243 as far as the plastic brown stock I sprayed mine with crinkle paint and baked it on and it has stayed on fine for years. They are nice guns.

Learning to use a Xp100 effectively when hunting can be frustrating at times. But the added challenge is what I like about them. Good luck and don't give up!
