Can a firearms company become too big for its umbrella?

June 8, 2009
REMINGTON ACQUIRES DAKOTA ARMS . . .
Remington Arms last Friday entered into an agreement to purchase Dakota Arms, the Sturgis, S.D., manufacturer of custom and semi-custom rifles. The sale includes the Dakota, Miller Arms and Nesika Bay Precision brands, plus Dan Walter Cases. "I am pleased to announce that Dakota Arms is joining Remington and the Freedom Group of companies," said Ted Torbeck, CEO of Remington and Freedom Group. "Dakota Arms is an icon within the industry and its fine products exemplify quality, craftsmanship and attention to detail. Dakota is the perfect complement to our industry-leading family of brands." Freedom Group comprises the Remington, Marlin, Bushmaster and DPMS/Panther Arms brands, among others.

My question and concern would be:

Should the current Hussein Regime take aim at Remington would not this heavy-handed attack cripple their economic structuring adversely affecting the firearms industry as a whole in one single swoop?

"Can a firearms company become too big for its umbrella?"

If you look at GM I think you get your answer.

Never thought about that...look what they did with Southwestern Bell and the telephone industry and the 'anti-trust' issues they came up with to break up Ma Bell....look what they have tried to do to MicroSoft...I wouldn't put it past them to do this....not so far fetched now that I think about it!

The Bell thing and this are really not the same thing. There were issuses having only one phone company.

I find it odd that Dakota would sell to Remington. It doesnt seem to be a very good fit, the two companies are completely different in terms of how they operate.

I think unless you're really not following Wall Street. Now why would I say Wall Street, well Remington is owned by a Wall Street Investment company. Cerbious ( or some form of spelling) is the company which owns amoung other ones such as Chrysler Corp, Blue Links (formally Georgia Pacific Distributation) both losers (follow the Wall Street or the news stories). The guy running the investment firm is only about 44 or 45 years old. Now quality is defined as how much we can make on this item. Good acquisition for Remington but I believe quality will eventually suffer as it usually does. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Along with Remington Cerberus also owns

Bushmaster....aquired 2006

Bushmaster bought out Cobb Manufacturing a maker of tactical rifles in August of 07.

Cerberus bought DPMS in December of 07

Remington bought Marlin in 2008

Of course they own a ton of other stuff too, GMAC for one....

GMAC is also replacing Chrysler Credit Corp. in the financing of vehicles on the Chrysler side of teh Govt. Auto Industry.

Scary how things link together, huh?

Especially with Obama's finger on the trigger. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

Didnt Browning buy Winchester?

FNH owns both of them.

FN Herstal or Fabrique National whatever you want to call it.

They currently own most of the US Military contracts for firearms (ousted COLT for the AR, M249, M240) and are trying harder and harder to take more.

They purchased both Browning and Winchester and have been releasing "NEW" rifles out of the old stuff.

The FNAR is a redesigned 2000's version of the Browning BAR. The FN PBR (Patrol bolt Rifle) is based on a Winchester 70 action.

And so it goes....
