Removing a stuck case - Part II

Now that we have the case tapped with a 1/4" - 20 thread we simply place the 2 large 5/8" grade 8 nuts over the case and rest them against the die face. Take the 1 1/4" long grade 8 bolt and slip over the washer. Then feed the bolt through the large nuts and into the 1/4" tapping in the case. Holding everything straight & square, simply tighten the bolt until it pops the stuck case up and out of the die body.

This is where you will start to break everything down. Remove the die from the press, with case still inside. The expander ball keeps the case from being able to be completely removed yet. Then remove the case from the die with the decapping pin & expander ball still inside. Should look something like this.

Finally, all that is left to do is cutting the case into two. This will allow complete removal of the pin & ball. A hacksaw or small tubing cutter will do the trick. Be extra carefull to keep the pin held back and out of the way so that no damage occurs to it.

... and that is how you properly remove a stuck case.

Atleast, as far as I know!

Thanks & great job.

Have you ever tried sticking a case intentionally? It can be very frustrating. I finally just cut the rim on opposite sides of the case and ran it up with the ram. What a chore!

I use the One Shot wax. It comes in a little can that resembles shoe polish.

Can these two post be combined into a sticky? Or the pictures combined into a new post? Then when a stuck case question comes up, they can be sent there.

Good job Ricky Bobby!

Totally agree, an excellent tutorial and should be combined and pinned. Very helpful.

Even if you buy the RCBS kit that includes all of the components, I still find I need a stack of washers or nuts as indicated in this tutorial.

Does anyone else put the die in the freezer for a couple of hours after drilling and tapping, but before attempting to pull the case? The theory being to take advantage of the contraction.

I'm very wary of putting too force on the case and possibly ripping the threads out and then really being hosed, so I put this in the category of "can't hurt". There's no objective way to know if it always or sometimes helps make pulling the case easier, but I personally have been doing it just in case it provides a little extra benefit.

This happened to me 6 or 7 years ago using a Redding die. What I did was stick the die in the freezer for a couple days. The brass contracted as what it was supposed to when temp was lowered and I was able to tap the case out.

Pretty funny I was just getting started reloading and I thought I had everything I needed. I went to sportsmans warehouse with my buddy wilydawg and was kind of going over what I had. He stops and grabs this kit off the shelf and said you will need this at some point while reloading so you might as well get it now. No doubt that night I got a stuck case and had to use it. This post would of helped me as I had to go buy a vise and a T-handle for my tap that I did not have.

I knew I should have done this sooner.
