Removing a Tikka barrel

I watched my gunsmith remove my Tikka T-3 223 Rem barrel. It took some force to do it. My gunsmith is a pretty big guy and he had to put out a good effort to get it to break loose.
 
It's not to bad if it SS.If it is blued is a B#$%* just like a Howa .If it blued and a howa or Tikka and you bring to my shop plan on buying a new barrel. I have bought 2 in the last 10 year because of messing up the action. Now I put a cut in the barrel just in front of the receiver ring to relieve the pressure after this they just about unscrew by hand. PS I go in @ 275 lb and me and a three foot cheater bar have a hard time .
 
Can't be any worse than doing an old Mauser. That said I doubt you can get most of them off without damaging the finish. Personally I like about a 4ft cheater bar and a 10lb maul, only beacuse it seems like sometimes a quick "rap" seems more effective that my 180lbs of dead weight.
 
My local smith said he had some trouble with mine but he got it off without marking it up.

BTW anyone looking for a Lilja barrel, they have the varmint contour. And boy do they shoot!!!!!!!
 
On almost all actions (except old Mausers) just warming the action to 250-300 degrees, with a propane tourch, makes removal easy.

I've also had luck throwing them in a freezer for a couple hours as well. Especially freezing them, and heating up the receiver ring quickly.
