Richard's Gunstocks ???

I'M hoping some of you will chime in on this.
I have a Savage model 12FVLH.204 heavy tapered barrel that needs a STOCK.
I just can't stand the pla- [beeep]- tick one any more!!! The gun will put 6 in a
2" circle at 100yrd. Thats probably as good as I will ever shoot, I just
hate that stock.
I'm leaning toward a Richard's Tac-Driver Silhouette, I have always wanted
a thumbhole stock. Being a south paw my choices are limited.
I like to do a little bench shooting, but I LOVE to shoot/at coyotes.
I have a (little time) to do some fit+finish work, but not days.
I will be doing some walking but only from the truck to set up site
so weight is only somewhat important, (but I am getting a little long in the tooth).

Your comments would be much appreciated.
THANKS

Soooooo are you looking for ideas on other stocks? If so and money is an issue. I would look at a Bell & Carlson (no thumb hole) or a stock from Stockade they do have a thumb hole stock and in a couple of different options when it comes to finishing. Those are the best priced stocks that I have found for a glass stock. Laminates are cheaper but heavier and they need a lot of work to get them done.

Thanks
I don't mind the sanding an maybe a little dremel work. But I would
like to get it in the field this fall not next fall.
ILL check out Stockade.
I guess weight will eventually be a issue.
I just don't want to put any time into the Savage stock. It's like making
a silk purse out of a sows ear.
Thanks Again

check out the Duramaxx stock from bell&carlson. it should be a drop in stock. it isnt laminated or thumbhole but i bet you will like it. i have a richards microfit thumbhole and wont go that route again. if you ordered a richards today id be willing to bet you wouldnt get it till feb or march.

Take a look at the Choate website. They have left hand varmint and sniper versions for the Savage short action rifles. Both versions have an oversize thumbhole stock that may interest you.

I have a fajen, a wenig, and 2 richards LH stocks, they take some work but they are a good stock, you may look at one of joel russo's clones of an A-5 in laminate, not a pistol grip but a real nice stock. here's one of mine, high comb rides the bags well

I wouldn't touch a Richards stock with a 20' long pole. They usally take 5 months to get and another month to finish. I ordered one for my Ruger 10/22 and it came in horrible! It looked like it was cut out with a die-grinder, and the reciever stuck out 1/8" from the bottem of the stock. Their total junk for something to have to wait that long for. It's not just me look over at rimfire central ( www.rimfirecentral.com ) under 10/22 stock building & finishing. Most everyone has had a problem with them. That site has 2 sponsers ( Gate Wood & S & K ) that make stocks for all types of guns that they like better, and come finished. H S Percision might have what you'er looking for.

Thanks for the suggestions gentleman!!!!!!!
I will check them all out.
I like a great looking checked/carved stock as much as the next guy.
Put being realistic, it's a working gun NOT a show gun.
(No offense expressed or implied)
If a gun shoots well off of my knee or sticks that good enough for me,
anything after that is just ---- cosmetic.
You would think Savage could put just a little more into there plastic
stocks! Id bet they would sell more.
OK im off my box now.
Thanks again.. ILL let you all know when I get the new stock.
Now Im lining toward Stockade.

Plastics/nylon are just what they are, Junk. I ordered a Richards. I also shoot in my right mind (left handed). I ordered a Lefthanded stock for a right handed action in Tac Driver. When it came it was perfect, except for one thing. It was right handed. By the way they have one for sale in right hand. I sent it back. They promised another one in left hand version in 5 weeks. That was 3 weeks ago. I have my fingers crossed. Also, you can get it 1/16 inch over to accomodate bedding without cutting out the extra wood. Make sure you get a fat barrel channel(no charge). Don't go for the standard barrel channel. You will have to sand it out to float the barrel.

+1 here. I would jump off a cliff before I would ever deal with Richards Microfit again. I have two stocks from them, both took forever and the last one after 7 months I had to hound them constantly just to get a reply. When I finally did get it, it was not the stock I ordered. I gave up. They are the most incompetent people I have ever dealt with. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

I don't understand all the discontent with richards stocks, I've used 2 richards, 2 fajens, a wenig, and a russo and they all were comparable being a semi finished stock.

My brother ordered 2 Mauser stocks and they're in the wood pile. They were just poor quality and heard some cusomers could never reach Richard's by phone on their orders. If they went out of buiness I wouldn't shed a tear for the trouble we had trying to made a good rifle stock out of crap. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/angry-smiley-055.gif

I ordered a Richard's walnut roll over for a short action savage in the cheapest grade they sell (55$ at that time) and it was a great stock. The action fit like it had been hand fit.

The wait is long though and there is some work to finishing it. I enjoyed the finishing but if you want to pop it in and go then Richard's is not your cup of tea.

OK Gentleman.

I had a long talk with Kevin at Stockade. He came right through the
phone and twisted my arm.(grin) He seems like a good guy and knew his stuff. Altho im pretty green at most of this.
I ordered a coyote stalker, left hand.
6 to 8 weeks for delivery, that hurts a little but thats what I get for
procrastinating.
Now if only the Foxpro Scorpion would just come in......

Thanks for your suggestions

Richards should be put out of business. Their quality is poor , their customer service is non-existent and their turn around time is the worst i have ever seen. Order one while you are in diapers and you might get it by the time you are old enough to vote. They are a bad company. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

I have had 6 of the Richard's stocks and everyone of them take a lot of work, and I mean a lot of work.

Boyd's on the other hand are great along with Fajen.

LH is double trouble.

If you are wanting to hunt with it this year, then buy a finished stock, best money you ever spent!
