RIchards Rifle Stocks

I worked on 2 Richards for my brother's Mauser and it was a freaking nightmare. They were rough, few cracks in the laminated wood and ny no means 95% inletted, more like 65%.
I would go to home Depot for 2x4 before I ever buy another stock from them and also heard they have been playing a vanishing act with customers.

Richards stocks has some nice designs, but he sold the business last year and the stocks are being made by someone else.
Richard's has nothing to do with it any more... he buys stocks from the new guy.

I am finishing up a Richards stock right now, just one or two more coats on it ought to do it. Richards has some noce woods, laminated and others. The exteriors very rough as compared to the old Fajen stocks, back when you could get a Fajen. Be prepared to do some work though on a Richards, inletting and finishing the outside. But for the $$$ they are a good deal IMO. I prefer Richards because they have enough wood left on the for me to shape the stock the way I want it to be.
Boyds might a better choice if you want a more inletted and smoother exterior, but your choices in styles are very limited.
I have been using Richards ever since Fajen quit offering coustom stocks. I finished dozens of them, no problems at all if you have the know how. I have always got the grade or better grade in most cases, of wood that I ordered. Never had any reason to send one back or any complaints about the stocks. Delivery time can be an issue, as they claim 8-12 weeks, but it closer to 16-20 the days. I didn't know Richards had changed hands and that may explain the long waits and poor customer service.

First , if you like doing stock work then the Richards is a good stock. The Richards stocks are about 50% inletted no matter what their web site might say. I just finished restocking my 270 Left Hand Model 70 in the brown laminate. There was no bolt or ejection port cut, the barrel Channel was only a grove cut the length of the forend, the forend was supposed to be rounded but was square and i payed them extra for them to round, the action screw holes were drilled a 1/4 inch off. It took about three weeks to sand , finish and inlet for the action. I used the JF Scrapers to inlet the barrel channel and it took at least a week with me working a number of hours each day. The stock is beautiful now that i have finished it, but not in a hurry to do another. I put seven to eight coats of tru-oil with each coat drying for 20 to 24 hours . If i purchase another stock it won't be from Richards, their customer service is the worst of any company i have dealt with. They won't answer their phone or return email. Order the stock in Jan and received in June . /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

Just so everyone knows there are two companies called Richards Custom Rifle Stocks one is Richards Microfit stocks and the other is just Richards Custom Rifle Stocks and yes this guy did sell his stock making to someone else.
The one I have is a Richards Microfit and I can not say enough good things about them.

I'm not trying to be negative , I'm just stating the facts . I emailed the company at least 10 times and called them around 20 times with no response or reply and shipping time was way beyond what is stated on their web site. This is the web site i ordered from. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif I was believing they lost my order and when i seen the stock i was wishing they had. The stock before i started finishing it. I had no real problem finishing the stock but it required major inletting of the action , mag and barrel before i glass bedded it. I do believe they should not misrepresent the product on their web site because some people would have gave up after seeing it before they even started .

Sorry to hear some of the negative reports because I've had great luck with Richards Microfit stocks. Their wildcat thumbhole is one of the coolest designs around. I've got one on a custom Win 70 Varmint rifle and it came out fantastic!

I emailed the company at least 10 times and called them around 20 times with no response or reply and shipping time was way beyond what is stated on their web site. I just finshed up a Richards stock. As the others stated they do take some work. But no big deal if you like to do stock work and have the know how.
