Rifle Build ?'s Pac-Nor vs. Lilja etc.

So I have some questions for those of you who have experience in this area.

First I was going to start with a remington 700 action. Just because it seems readily available and from what I've researched a lot of "first time" builders do this. Do any of you have any other suggestions?

Second, as far as what barrel to go with? From my research I've found a lot of individuals who talk about Pac-nor and Lilja barrels. What experience/recomendations do any of you have in this regard?

Do some companies manufacture certain calibers better than others?

Lastly in building a custom rifle what other steps or things should I look out for along the way?

I know some of my questions may sound dumb, but thanks in advance for any and all information.

You just described SS110's 17rem., man I love the looks of that rifle

If you don't have brass already, you're behind the curve and may want to look at the wildcats suggested. Model 7's are nice little rifles carry rifles too if you stumble on a cheap one with the right bolt face. Looking forward to seeing what rifle you add to the 17cal group here.

I would say from my experience of having both Lijas and Pac nor. I feel Lija is slightly better. But Pac nor is awesome too.

Quote:K22,
Just wondering, I think a may have seen a photo of your .17 a while back in a thread. Would it happen to be built on a kimber 84M platform?

Yes you did and yes it is.

I had 2 PAC Nors no more I have a Lilja and Brux and 2 Douglas and 1 shilen the PAC nors were 6mm they would foul horrible I sent them both back and they gave my money back they were really good to deal with but they won't get me 3 times since then I've had excellent luck with a 22 cal. Douglas and 6mm Douglas and my Lilja is also extremely accurate that too is in a 6mm my shilen is a 20 cal and that is extremely accurate also seems like anything I put in it will shoot the Brux is just a blank so no word on that yet. I almost ordered another Douglas last fall but u hear all kinds of hype of this barrel and that barrel so I ordered a Brux I wouldn't hesitate on another Douglas if you didn't wanna wait otherwise I'd just get a Lilja for sure.

VC,
My Pac Nor shoots very well on a Remington 700 action. Not fancy but deadly accurate. Dirty Dog, glad to see you finally have the CZ up and running. I can't wait to hear how it shoots.

Dirty Dog,
Thank you so much for the pics. That is pretty much what I envisioned only with a stainless action as well! I love that glass on top as well, every gun I currently own is topped with a leupold.

Arcorey,
Thanks that is in the neighborhood, but as mentioned above I like that warm walnut look of dirty dogs. Also, why would currently not having brass put me behind the curve? I've not researched the availability, is it that hard to find?

And thanks again to everyone this is turning into a really great thread!

Yes, the brass is hard to find at times and even the bullets can be. Heck, primers and powder aren't easy to find anymore either.

I like wood as much as the next guy, shoot, I do the inletting for a relatively well known wood stock builder, but I have to admit that carbon fiber is hard to beat on an all climate predator rifle.

I'll admit I'm a 17rem brass hoarder. I scour the interwebs pretty hard for new 17rem brass on a routine basis. I've found more hens teeth than brass. Used stuff I find here and there, but new is almost unobtanium. I can actually find 17fireball brass before the 17rem. I've heard that Remington does 1 run a year. Not sure if that is fact or not, but availability is starting to support that theory. That said, I ordered a Shilen barrel for an AR in 17rem. It's a fun caliber to say the least.

Thought we was talking 17 cal barrels ?

My best friend has a 22-250 with a lilja barrel on it and it is the best shooting rifle I have ever seen,5 shot 1/8 inch groups at 100 yards, no kidding,we were testing loads and I shot a .118 5 shot group with h380 and he shot a .126 with vv140.If I make make a suggestion instead of using a rem action go with a custom action there are several out there that wont cost you much more than buying a rifle to get your action, then having it trued up, and maybe even a new ptg bolt if yours is too out of round or small after the raceway is reamed.
Its your gun and you can do as you like but just take a evening and look into the custom actions and ask your smith how much it will cost to have your action trued, faced , treads single point recut, lugs lapped, raceway reamed, and a new bolt if you are looking to get the most accuracy out of your rifle the action needs trued.
Several of the custom actions are based on the rem 700 action so triggers, stocks and safeties are readily available.Good luck on your build

You can build a very accurate rifle on the 700 action. And ask about barrels, people will tell you whatever one they use is what you should get, that it's the best . In .17 cal non-factory I have barrels from Douglas, Montana Rifleman, PacNor, Shilen, and Wilson Match (plus a couple others that haven't yet been shot) and I'd buy any of them again. They all shoot well and there's no telling one from another.
