rifle magizne

I take my rifle with me going out our county road just about everyday now, in case I spot a coyote. I've got permission to hunt every acre out our 4 miles of gravel road except on land owner.
My question is will it hurt, or weaken my magizne too bad if I leave it full instead of emptying it everyday.
I'm retired and we don't have any kids around and I always keep it loocked and the chamber empty.

You will hear it both ways, but if good steel is used in the springs, I do not think it hurts to keep them loaded. I keep mine loaded and have never had a spring get weak. I have 2, 9mm Browning hi-power mags that have been loaded for more than 40 years and they function perfectly.

Hello Chris,
I don't like the idea for another reason. It makes it too easy to become the neighborhood watchman. When you go out to investigate strange sounds and such, you're potentially placing yourself or someone else in harms way. You build up a certain amount of false courage or bravado with a loaded gun nearby. I'm not saying you would do such things, but the temptation is there. Save some potential heartache and keep the guns and ammo in separate areas. This is meant merely as a friendly opinion. Best wishes.

chris, The part of country where I'm from, almost everyone (that I know or associate with)has a gun of some sort in their car or truck. Many are loaded, with one in the chamber. Some aren't, I try not to keep one in the chamber unless I am actually in the field. I do think the springs in auto pistol magazines can get weak, which causes feeding problems, but with the limited compression distance on a rifle, you will probably never have a problem. I change out the mags I keep with my carry pistol every month or so, to let the springs "rest". I don't want a mis-feed if God forbid I ever have to use it.

Cal I appreciate your opinion and you stated it very well, however...I wish to god there had been a "neighborhood watchman" with a loaded pistol readily available when a family member of mine was shot and put in a wheel chair for life by some druged out loser. It always happens to someone else right? That will never happen if you stay out of the wrong part of town right? THIS HAPPENED TO HER IN HER OWN FRONT YARD IN A NICE NEIGHBORHOOD IN SALT LAKE CITY! A firearm without ammo readily accessable is like a bull with tits. OF NO USE! I'm probably coming off as a real gun totin yahoo but it hurts everytime I see her in that wheelchair and know she'll never walk again. Heck of a thing to happen to a energetic 18 year old with a promising future. And she was only his first victum of the night. I wish I was making up this story but it's a sad fact and nothing I can do can change the past...but I may be able to prevent something like this in the future, if, and only if...I'M PREPARED!!! There's your contrasting viewpoint.

Cal, you are entitled, to your own opinion, and I can see some of your reasoning. But...In the thinking of what you "would" do in a hostile situation, one often has a false sense of security of how he or she would handle themselves in the case of an attack. At times, people who are very well trained, fail to react in the manner they were taught. The percentage of police officers shot with their own weapon, is overwelming. People who are trained in the martial arts, still get their butts whipped by the people they think can't do it. I took some handgun training years ago, and the instructor made us run around the range buiding 5 or 6 times, grab our revolvers, and shoot 6 shots rapid fire at a target 15 feet away. Kill shots were not all that common. His point was how your body reacts in a stressfire situation. I guess what I'm getting at, is I know for a fact, if I'm in the situation where I have to fire a shot, I don't want the worry about my gun being loaded or unloaded. My carry gun, is loaded. An empty chamber, is an unloaded weapon. When my pistol is needed. I don't want to have to cycle the action. I want to be able to fire when needed. As in anything else, responsibility is the holder of the grips. People need to make their choices wisely.

Im with Jack. It shouldnt hurt the springs in your magazine at all. If you have an unloaded pistol its the same as having a rock. If your rifle is unloaded its like having a stick. If you lock all your guns up, You dont have anything.

Jack must have inherited those Brownings, as he isn't old enough to have owned let alone had them loaded for 40 years...........  /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Cal,
That's the problem with the world today. Nobody wants to get involved. We should all be neighborhood watchmen. Maybe if we all got involved, we wouldn't have the problems we have in the world today.
I for one trust myself. I have made certain decisions before hand. I will not hesitate to use a gun in the protection of myself, my family and my friends and neighbors. If someone points a gun at me in a threatening manner, I will shoot them. I will not ask them nice to not do that. I will not say please put it down. I will not say wait until the police get here and see what happens. I will pull the trigger with the intent to kill them. I will get involved. I will be the neighborhood watchman. I will even watch out for you if you move into my neighborhood. For you will be my neighbor. I have your back. Will you have mine?
As far as mag springs go, if it is a modern mag, don't worry about the spring. The steel they use these days is great stuff.
Time to get off the soap box and watch the neighborhood.

I hate to admit it but I am old enough. I bought that Browning, with 2 mags and a holster, all with matching serial numbers, when I was 16-18. I bought it in Virginia, out of state for me, when out of state purchases were legal. Big gun show in Richmond, I paid top dollar because it was perfect, 100%, like new. I think I paid $65, but it may have been a little less.

Jack:

Was just trying to help ya out..... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I bought a pair of Brownings with 6 high cap mags when on R&R in Hong Kong in '66....so I guess you just made me reflect on how long that I've had mine and had them loaded too.....

Guess my 25 year old brain doesn't want to admit.....

I bought a Ruger P89 in 92. It two 15 round clips has been full ever since. I shoot it about once a month. I have never had a problem. I think if it's a good quality clip and you take care of it (cleaned and oiled) you won't have a problem. Happy shooting.

From what I've read around various places, keeping a magazine loaded has little effect on it's springs. What wears the springs is loading/unloading/loading/unloading excessively, day after day, month after month.

I had read that there have been .45 magazines loaded in WWII that were unpackaged and fired and reloaded and fired again with no problems. Same thing with M-16 magazines from vietnam. Urban legend, perhaps. But I've known people that stockpiled stuff for "Red Dawn" and shot up magazines that had been loaded for five years and they worked fine.

What kills quality springs is when you take the magazine apart and start playing slinky with them.

GLAD TO HAVE YOU FOR A NEIGHBOR MOOSE57!!! This country needs more people who aren't afraid to do what is right when and where it's needed. There are plenty of bad people in the world who will use their guns without hesistation on those they perceive to be weak or vulnerable. We need more good guys who have guns, understand guns, and are willing to use them when they see someone innocent being victimized. Let's face it, the police can't be everywhere to protect everybody! And the criminals aren't going to wait for you to call them as they patiently wait to perpitrate their chosen crime! Dam proud to know you're a fellow Utahn Moose57!!! (interesting how a question about a magazine turned into a gun rights forum. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif ....OK, I know, BTT.

HEY thanks for all the input.
Didn't realize I'd start all this chatt on protecting one self. But I agree that let some jerk pull a gun on me or just try breaking in, he's got some lead coming close.
I just hated unloading my magizne all the time but I see now I won't.
thanks again CHRIS FROM Mo
