Rifle Rest

For the past 15 years I have used what I believe is an Outers front rest when shooting of the bench in load development and such. (cast aluminum with orange paint) My main complaint has always been that no matter how much you tighten it, the top wobbles a bit. Would I be moving up in the world buying a "Rock" by Caldwell? Have any of you used this rest and what are your opinions? Thanks!

I have the rock and like it a lot. It does fine for working up loads and stuff, but would'nt be the most practical for competition. I find it to be very sturdy and well worth the purchase.

Wife gave me a Rock for Christmas. I haven't shot from it, but I can say that it does not wobble from poor mechanical fit. For the pric and my needs it fits the bill.

What these guys said.

The orange one you have is probably a Hoppe's. And yes, they are some wobbly suckers.

"The Rock" would be a substantial improvement!

For rifles that aren't too heavy, say up to about 13 pounds or so, the only thing the Rock rest lacks compared to more expensive competition style pedestals is weight (heavier is better, when every .001 counts), and speed (it's got now windage adjustment, or sighter cam). And, some of the parts aren't the greatest quality either - the screw/feet are pretty soft, for instance, so you can't hammer them into a concrete bench top too many times. But, it's a good steady rest for normal load work, without spending too much money.

AND in addition to what DAA said - The Rock can be up graded with all the best goodies. The foot thread is the same as the Simclair/Hart/Witchita/Bald Eagle so their foot upgrades will also work on the Rock. And if you want even fancier the windage tops sold by those companies will also fit, along with their posts and mariners wheels. About the only thing you would miss is their cast iron weight, that is except for the aluminum base on Bald Eagle rests.
