I have found a Baikal 94 rifle-shotgun combo in 12ga. 3" and 7.62x39 caliber. Just wondered if anyone had any experience with these guns or any combo guns in general for called coyotes ? Thanks !

Most of those over under rifle shotgun combos are not accurate. The one you are talking about is made in Turkey which I will usually stay away from. I do have one Turkish shotgun which is my sons 920 Mossberg. I would look at the Savage if you are set on a combo gun. The problems are fast follow up shots and inaccuracy. I carry a rifle and shotgun when calling if I am going to an area where there are going to possibly be close shots.

AWS needs to get in on this topic - multiple combo guns in his stable with experience on them. I think for the average caller not hunting all wide open spaces, it's the ideal gun. Shotgun most of the time with a backup shot, and the capability to reach out there when needed. The Russian guns are solid, accurate enough for most uses, and have worked well for many guys. A bit clunky and heavy though vs some others that cost a fair deal more. How many times do you get more than two shots east of the Miss.???

I have quite a bit of experience with them.

I started years ago doing feral dog control with a German Drilling SxS 16ga over 9.3x72 it worked very good for what we used it for. It wasn't mine but the die was cast.

I had a Savage 24 223 over 2oga. The ergonomics sucked, you had to mount the scope too high to be able to get at the barrel selector or hammer. Sold it, but the idea was good in a 22Lr or something that didn't require a scop it would be fine.

A few years back I found a very nice V. Bernadelli 12ga over 5.6x50R Mag, two triggers(front triggera set trigger for the rifle) and tang safety. Very easy to operate. With the soderred ribs between the barrel it isn't a rig to shoot groups with unless you wait for the barrel to completely cool down between shots but it does put the first shot in the right place everytime. It has a fixed improved mod choke and shoots BB's well.

Bernadelli I have put lower rings on it since this pic.

Right now I have an Fausti/Stefano combo gun imported by American Arms in the 80's in transit. It is a 12ga with choke tube over 222 Rem, with seperate barrels.

Will add pics in a few min.

Valmets, FinnClassics,Tikka, Savage 2400 are great rigs as are most of the Euro rigs. if you look hard there are a number of them out there that are fairly reasonable. The Bernadelli was $1100 because it was in a nearly impossible to get calliber, I handload everything using RWS brass, I only have a hundred rounds but they should last longer than me. The AA 12ga/222Rem was $600. Be wari of German guns with claw mounts , if they didbnt come with the gun they can cost close to a grand. Both mine have 11mm ribs on them so finding low rings is a little tough, but I did find a 11mm to weaver adaptor that only adds about .125" to the hight will be testing it the next couple of monts to see if they will hold up to the 12ga recoil.

To find them they are usualy grouped with the drillings on auction sights so just do your search for drillings and you will see the combo also.

The russian guns are heavy, nearly 8.5 without scope, but they feel stout. Bud's was runnig them at around $600 new.

As far as inaccurate for the second shot, by the time you get it reloaded there is usually little time for a second shot, That's why my signature is "After the first shot the rest are just noise". I don't take marginal shot, it's easier to call them in a couple of days later if you don't shoot and miss.

The bernadellin will shoot just under 2" at 200 yrds as shown with the scope set on 4x, if I wait about 20 min between shots I also know my rifle and know that a quick second shot will be 5" high at 200 so I just have to hold on the bottom of the coyote. I can hold on fur to 300yrds as a 52gr Speer is pushing 3600fps.

I had a Savage 12FV (.223/12ga) and hated it. The trigger pull was terrible, the selector switch on the hammer was difficult to operate with gloved hands but the biggest problem was with the POI. When using my shotgun barrel I had to aim at almost two feet high when looking through my scope.

On guns like the Biakal and the AA I have coming the POI is adjustable. On the Euro guns most are very good about being regulated well. The Savage I had was regulated well and the shotgun barrel was pretty much on as I was able to kill a flying duck on the way back from a stand using the scope on 1X.

I did have the trigger adjusted on the Savage to 5 lbs and pretty crisp.

The Savage I had.

I'm pretty old and my vision sucks so I need a scope, can't see iron sights any more. If I could still use iron sights I might still have the gun, like I said with out a scope it was a pretty nice rig.

I have the Baikal in 12ga/223rem. It is plent accurate and I think I picked it up for about $475 used. It is heavy, which you will appreciate when you pull front trigger on a load of 3" dead coyote. The placement of the front trigger feels a little far forward to me. The back rifle trigger is placed perfect but is quite heavy. The rifle barrel heats quickly, but my mild loads will allow me to shoot a 3 shot group. I haven't toyed with the tuning of the barrels. Most people want to sync them to the same point of impact, I feel that defeats the purpose. My rifle is zeroed at 75yds since that seems to be in the middle of the ranges I shoot and the shotgun seems good to about 40yds. I don't carry mine as much as I use to. I've found the 223 was harsh on our small fox and I tend to prefer a rifle over shotgun. I hang onto it for areas that go from thick to open and back when I'm hunting alone. I probably have mine a little over scoped with a 4x-12x-50mm Buckmasters side focus in Millet steel rings. They aren't made for the 11mm integral rail. They are 13mm and I torqued them down hard. Here are some pictures of my setup. I have a butt ammo holder for the shotgun ammo and a sling that holds 4 rifle rounds. I just grab it and I've got what I need all in one.

Shots on black from prone at 50yds off a sandbag. Group above shot same way from 100yds with same point of aim.

If I was only hunting coyotes, or was less comfortable shooting moving game with a rifle, I'd probably carry mine more. They are best described as durable field grade. I limited myself to 100yds with mine for the most part and it is a solid gun.

Great pics... WOW

I saw a Valmet 12/223 used for 400.00 today, but couldn't decide if it was worth messing with or not. Anyone have any knowledge or thoughts on the Valmet...?
