Ring height suggested for Flat top AR15

As I mentioned in a previous post, I bought my first AR15. I am going to put a 3-9x40 scope on it. It is the Stag Arms Super Varminters. What scope ring height is suggested for a flat top AR with a 40mm scope. The stock is pretty much flush with the reciever.

Thanks for your help with an AR newbie.

I needed some extra space for it to fit me comfortable. I have the extra high millet rings. But the suggestion for most rifles is to keep the scope as close to the bore as possible. So if it is comfortable for you that low it will be fine.

Extra high rings are usually suggested for proper mount height (not for scope clearance). I still prefer the one piece Aramalite or LaRue if you can afford it.

I all depends on if you use a riser? Med to high with a riser, high to extra high without a riser.

The thing is though, all the different brands of rings have different specs. for what they call "high rings" or what the call "extra high" rings. On company's "extra high" rings may be the same height as another company's "high rings". So be carefull when choosing your ring height if you are just ordering off the internet. I would suggest to go somewhere where you can bring your AR into and actually fit it right there with the wrings that you prefer.

I have several ARs and I am telling you from experience on this. My first was easy, it was an Amalite that came with the one piece mount. My next one was a Bushy Pred and this is where I wasted some shipping and time. I ordered Warne "high" rings...didn't fit right for me. I sent them back and got the extra high rings. All rings will vary from company to company on their hight standards.

Me too Lance,,,

Armalite mounts run about $89 from their site. They are well worth the price!!!

I bought a one-piece mount from Model-1. It is very solid. The only thing I can see wrong with using just plain rings is that it's hard to get the scope far enough forward to that your face isn't touching the scope. With the one-piece it allows you to move the scope forward a little more than with rings.

One-inch high Millet rings worked great on my Stag flat top for $40.00!

High or extra high?

My mounts were Extra High and they fit me perfect. But they do have high and medium heights as well. So my guees is his are the high's and mine are the xtra highs.

The thing about haveing the scope as close to the bore, is wrong on the AR. The way they are designed line of site should be two to two and a half inches above the bore line. that means high to x high rings or a riser under the rings. thats why the iron sites sit si high above the bore even on a flat top

Bo,
A scope on any rifle only has to be high enough to see through it! Having a scope too low on an AR means holding your head sideways and losing cheek weld. Not to mention accomodating a large objective diameter, if present...

Here's what MY proper scope height/ eye relief requirements are, for reference...

Head comfortably vertical, both eyes open, firm (and repeatable) cheek weld to stock and full sight picture through the glass.

Whatever ring/base combo gets that done for the shooter is the right combo for that particular shooter. That is why lots of guys are happy with lots of different configs on their ARs...

That's a good example knock'emdown. Notice that the turrets are still centered between the rings. Be sure to get the right diameter rings for the scope of your choice. Any scope at the right height, will handle objectives up to 65MM, so it's a non-issue.

I think I found a sleeper as far as rings go for an ar. I was in the local gun shop the other afternoon and he had some Leupold see through rings. The package never really said what they were as far as hight. They were pretty tall and a little taller than than a set of high leupold rings he also had. I bought them for 17 bucks. When I got home they were just right for me. They may be a tad bit lower than the set of Burris ex-high tactical rings I have. They will work just dandy and are of great quality. Just my two cents. As has been said before , the heigth isn't as much of a problem as getting the scope far anough forward to get proper eye releif. I used plain extra high weaver rings for a long time. But my scope wa never far enough forward for proper eye releif and cheek weld.
