Any of you use this place for auto and truck parts. I need to do some work on the Tacoma and their parts are way cheaper than Napa or Autozone. Enough cheaper makes me wonder about the quality of the parts. Almost $200 cheaper than Autoxone and $150 cheaper than Napa. And Napa is cheaper than Autozone. One repair is a CV axle and I sure don't want to have to do it twice because of cheap azz parts.

ive used them in the past, but make sure you compare to amazon for pricing.

i've found a bunch of times by the time i pay shipping from rock, amazon actually beats them by a few $ - and the return process with amazon is simpler (and cheaper) - plus its usually 2 day shipping from amazon too.

sometimes rock wins, other times amazon wins.

I need to put brakes on my Tacoma and looked at RA. I am going to compare them with autozone.
All the questions and info that parts stores want for a set of wipers or a light bulb, RA doesn’t require much info for brakes. They don’t specify 2wd or 4x4, all there is are six lug or five lug hubs.
I dread having to send anything back.

Their shipping is kinda high. A brake kit and an axle is $48.00 shipping. I know its heavy but thats a little pricey. The parts are pretty cheap and thats got me wondering about quality.

i will not ever buy anything from rock auto again. i had a dodge dakota and the rack and pinion started leaking. bought one from rock. i installed it, which was a pita, and 3 days later it was leaking. was evident it was a bad seal on one side.

yeah, they replaced it, but i had to pay shipping back. and i'm thinking i had to pay shipping once again to get the replacement back to me. not 100% sure on that part.

so my time/labor to remove it, box it up and ship it back. then my time/labor to install the replacement.

i know the whole thing left a bad, bad taste in my mouth.

i could of got one local and it would of turned out much cheaper in the long run.

ya.. i have a full OEM suspension set i have to send back thats under warranty. you do have to pay to send back to them, but i dont think they charge to send back to you once they determine it is a warrantied part.

id be super upset if it was just a couple days... thats for [beeep] sure.

the parts i'm sending back have 2 years on them so... i got my $ worth and i'm doing the warranty to have a full set on hand for the next swap.

i amazoned a front prop shaft for my cousin's jeep (i have prime, he doesnt). got a bad one, failed within like 2 weeks. because it was an amazon vendor - no hassle at all, sent me a return label no charge, had the new part within a day.

its also part of why i deal with amazon a lot more than i do places like rock. even if it costs me a few extra greenbacks (within reason anyway)

that customer service is often worth paying a few extra bucks for, not to mention the faster/cheaper shipping (if you're prime already anyway)

Napa wants $101. for a new cv axle, Rock wants $58. Has me wondering how they sell so cheap unless its one of those get what you pay for deals. I just want it fixed right the first time.

same brand? i notice that rock carries stuff that the national parts chain rarely does. just like amazon does. they all have their house brand chinesium. which is worth about what you pay for it, IMHO anyway.

i try to stick to buying OEM parts from either place when i'm shopping with them. at least then you have a better chance of getting once and done quality. i drive a LOT of miles (roughly 50k/yr)... so paying for good parts is actually a cost-benefit.

for example... just last week..

i had to replace the RF CV-shaft on my silverado. i paid $285 (shipped) for an acdelco OEM part from amazon, it was at my door in about 36 hours.

gmpartsdirect.com wanted $340 + shipping
rock auto wanted $285 + shipping
auto zone sells locally for $400.

orileys/autozone/napa (non OEM) equivalent house brand (durlast, etc) part was $140-$160 range

amazon/rock auto chinesium grade products $70 and up.

that extra $100ish i just spent... i'll proably get 100-150k or more miles out of that part, vs maybe 75k with a national chain house brand item. i'm lucky that i have a mechanic buddy with a lift in his garage so my labor cost is minimal but still.... i wont have to pay to have it installed twice (or more) compared to buying a duralast. been down that road before.

its just like this last round with my brakes. i spent premium $ on cryotreated "frozen rotors" and HAWKE brake pads for my fronts. got a tip from a shop that services a lot of the corvette racing club guys about them. again sick of replacing house brand cr@p every 30k because the rotors warp.

they're $135 each for the rotors and $68 for the Hawk brake pads..

but they've got 75k on the set so far, and the pads still have ~5mm until i get to the rivets. we're keeping a real close eye on them every oil change to make sure i DONT hit the rivets and destroy the rotors. i could pad slap the rotors and probably easily push another 75k out of them. I'd be on my 3rd - and maybe 4th - set of duralast gold rotors by now. i got 17k out of the set i replaced with the frozen rotors.

its all about what works for you. and then applying smart shopping on top of it.

Spend about $225 on the genuine Toyota part. If you really want it done right and done once.

The Cardone CV's at Rock and similar brands at other places are okay. They're so cheap, and Tacoma CV's are so easy to change, it's not a sin to try one. I'd probably roll the dice on the $50 one over the $100 one because it is just a roll of the dice as to which will last longer.

The Toyota CV's are definitely higher quality. And definitely a lot more expensive. But that's what I'd always go with on a Tacoma I give a crap about.

I have used rock auto before with no complaints really other than shipping can be high. I replaced all the steering and suspension parts plus the brakes and rotors on my 01 F150 a couple years ago and got all the parts from there due to being cheaper. If everything ships from the same warehouse it’s not as bad. I ordered Motorcraft, MOOG, and Wagner brand parts. I think it’s more of a chance taken when you order the economy (cheapest) line of parts.

One can usually look through the list at Rock Auto & chose the part based on reviews or perceived quality. Often there are a handful of choices with many parts. Maybe that 14 year old vehicle with 190k miles doesn’t need the best quality replacement part?

I’ll often run the part number against what’s offered on Amazon or eBay, see what’s out there.

if anyone is interested and will be ordering from rock in the near future.. this is from the Silverado/Sierra forum that i'm on for my truck...

Rock auto is one of the approved folks in the "vendors only" area of the site and shared this

I ended up going to NAPA. I bought two new axles and a brake kit. All were new, Premium parts according to them. They come with a lifetime warranty. They were in stock items and NAPA is just down the road from my house. I've never been much of a mail order guy. With NAPA being close, if there's a problem they are only a few blocks away. Thanks!

Nice to have a good store local. I use to use an O’Reilly here in town, seems they have to order everything now and it’s a day or two out. Only stock a few choices in wiper blades even. I just go there now when mainly it’s time for an oil change to get oil.
