Back in Nov. I was approached by a farmer. He has a old quarry on his farm.Seems a coyote raised a batch of pups in there. This quarry is about 10acres in size and covered with thick brush and trees.A little over half way around it is bordered by corn field. The rest is mostly his cow pasture and a small hay field.Aout a 1/4 mile away is a marsh with cattails and such.I looked at this set up and figured it would be like shooting fish in a barrel.
Since I was due for surgery in early Dec.My window of opportunity was small.Lots of pick-up hunters around, and dog hunters.Since This is my 2nd year of calling(terrible 2's) and did,nt want to make them call wise if possible.
1'st time I called just after dark. They were 100 yds across a corn field and 20yds into thick brush.4 sets of eyes and no clear shot.Rabbit sqealed them and they let me know in no uncertain terms that I was in their territory.Could'nt coax em out though.I waited a week or so and tried pup distress sounds just before dark from across the hay field.Nothing.My boy's came in for the holidays and tried a decoy and rabbit squalls but could'nt pull them out.Just before they went home We tried 1 more time. They carried my gun out and set me up. Then they set up a preditor enticer near a fence row and had at it.No luck.
I've got a week of convolessing before the Doc will let me drive again. With this mild weather there ain't nobody hunting yotes here.yet.Should I back off their door step and call from farther away? Gotta rare opportunity here sure would like to clean house.
