Can someone provide a tutorial or provide input on how you install roll pins when assembling an AR lower. I've assembled 8-10 over the past few years and would like to hear how others do it.
Not scott or mike but I hammer them in, just put masking tape on every thing to keep from dinging it up. The trigger guard roll pin cannot have enough oil on it when installing it.
Looks like Scott obviously hammers them in if he (scottmilk) is using a punch
I used to hammer everything in, but now my lowers have the screw for the bolt catch, i also have the integrated trigguer guard so I don't hammer anything in anymore. If you need to borrow a set, I have 3 sets of them.
Vice Grips with tape on the jaws for sure!!! I used to tap them in with a lil brass hammer. Then i read an article on assembleing lowers and they showed the vice grip method and i tried it. works like a charm and u have great control over the pin and dont flare it in the least.
I've done both and like tapping them in best. Since I live in a small town and could not get a roll pin punch set locally,...I made my own. I have one with a hole drilled in the end to start it. Then one with a dimple inset to take it almost flush then another with a nipple on the end that fits in the roll pin hole to set them flush.
I don't know why, but no matter how much tape I put on the vice grips and on the lower I always got minor damage to the bolt catch area so now I tap them in with out any problems.
