Rubbing on coyotes?

The loss of fur from rubbing comes in many different "patterns", can show up usually on the hips or the back of the coyotes and has been blamed on everything from tick infestation to the rubbing done from going under or into something that rubs the fur from the back to the simple act of rubbing on things to remove fur as the weather warms. In this part of the country, we started seeing rubbed coyotes just about 3 weeks ago. Here's a pic. of a coyote that I shot two weeks ago. Notice the grey especially on the hips and notice the lack of gaurd hairs on the back. The grey that you are seeing is the under fur or the fur closer to the body, what is missing is the fur that is longer and would have a tanish or brown color.

The difference bewteen the two will be obvious once you see both. Mange will usually result in total lose of hair in patches along with develoment of scabs, and eventually, over time, the coyote with mange will/can become nothing but gross, stinkin, scabbed over skin from one end to the other, usually starting at the rear working forward. A mangy coyote will stink to high heavens!! The worse the mange, the worse the smell. If the mange is in the early stages, the smell won't be any worse than a normal smelling coyote.
